5.7 Mbps vs. 2.7 Mbps

I've got 2 computers on my home network (neither is wireless).

both computers have the exact same cablenut settings, but computer 1 is testing at 5.7 Mbps, while computer 2 is only at 2.7 Mbps.

The only difference on the surface is that comp 1 is XP Pro and comp 2 is XP Home.  Could that really make much of a difference?

I'm banging my head on a wall trying to figure out what the heck is slowing down comp 2.  i've checked and made sure there's no weird programs running in the background (this is my fiance's comp).  I've even gone and disabled everything I could, but no love.

Any suggestions?

you checked for weird programs in the background.. however, did you scan for spyware.. if not, please scan with Spybot S&D and Ad-aware. I don't think the problem could arise from the Operating system of the 2 computers.. It could be because of the cables as DaKeith said, but that is a bit unlikely as he pointed out as well.. Try scanning for spyware and see what you find :)
