Hi guys,

well I finally got my upgrade Friday..however I do have a problem and was hoping someone could give me some insight.

When I connect directly (without router) I get the advertized speeds. With the router I get about 2mb/s less on the downloads and 20kb/s less upload.

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 7091 Kbps about 7.1 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB)

Download Speed is:: 866 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2)

Test Time:: Sat Oct 8 22:14:27 CDT 2005

Bottom Line:: 127X faster than 56K 1MB download in 1.18 sec

Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 93.58 % faster than the average for host (cox.net)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-9KSH7IF2R

:::.. Upload Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 877 Kbps about 0.9 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)

Upload Speed is:: 107 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1)

Test Time:: Sat Oct 8 22:15:34 CDT 2005

Bottom Line:: 16X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 9.57 sec

Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 67.69 % faster than the average for host (cox.net)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-ZP9QSG6FO

I have checked the router and the settings are all fine. By diagnosing the modem it does say 100BaseTX. Firewall on router is enabled although disabling it doesnt do anything for throughput.

Help please!!

Thanks,

Victor

Hey VictorS -

First, are you running through a wired or wireless router (I'm assuming wired).

Second, is it a 10/100 switch? If so, verify that ALL links are running 100mbps.

You can manually force them to 100mbps if you have to.

I am asking this because if your link is set back to 10mbps somewhere in the route, you will not easily achieve above 7mbps.

When the link is set to 10mbps, the ethernet overhead will limit your true connection to about 7mbps, which is where you are with the router.

Verify that and let us know.

when using a router always use 100 Mbps full duplex

when your connecting direct to modem, then try both 100Mbps full and 10 Mbps half and compare speed

im on 10 Mbps and pull this

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 9478 Kbps about 9.5 Mbps (tested with 20972 kB)

Download Speed is:: 1157 kB/s

Tested From:: http://hem.bredband.net

Test Time::

Bottom Line:: 169X faster than 56K 1MB download in 0.89 sec

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 53.78 % of your hosts average (bredbandsbolaget.se)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-IA2OY47QT

with overhead thats 10 000 Kbps  :D

Hey thanks for the quick response..

- Yes I have a Belkin wired router

- My PC is set to 100mb/s full duplex (was at auto sense before I started tinkering)

- On my previous 5000/768 I was right on the cap

- Latest router firmware installed

- Setting to 10mb/s doesnt make a difference

Question tho...how can I force the router to accept 100mb/s? I cannot find any settings for that.

Thanks

Victor

I guess I am thinking on the cable modem side, the older modems with 10mbps WAN ports can't pull much over 7mbps no matter what the downstream cap is set to.

AND, if I thought about it, I pull about 9.5 on my home network when transfering.

Victor, what  model is your Belikin router?

I have 2 routers, one Microsoft MN-500 (I think) it has a 10/100 switch, BUT the WAN port is only 10mbps.

My other router is a D-Link DI-524, and its WAN port is 10/100 selectable.

What do you think Van?

I can never achieve above ~7.5mbps through the router with the 10mbps WAN port.

As soon as I can get my 2 year old to freakin' leave me alone :angry5:, I will test the theory. (I do love him dearly, though)

Victor, I would probably look for a router with a 10/100 WAN port.

i havent made any research about that Belkin router, but i know some of em slow down speed alot, since speed is fine without router, and hes been testing linkspeed change and duplex change on hes NIC
