Limited throughput

Almost looks like QoS is enabled, to load balance the bandwidth between the 3 connected machines.  Unhook 2 of them from the network and test 1 computer through the router to test this. (at least I think that would work)  If that works, just disable QoS on the router.

I tried running it with only one computer connected to the router (disconnected the other LAN cables from the router) and the modem connected to the WAN port.  But it was still only about 5.5 Mbps.  Again, I tried connecting directly to the modem, and it was over 16 Mbps.  It's definitely something with the router.

Any firewalls on? If not then I guess it's the router. :?

Yes, Norton.  But I get over 16 Mbps connected directly to the modem even with Norton enabled.

DO you think I need a new router?  Should I get the 54g?  Would that do the trick for my purposes (15 Mbps/2Mbps)?  Thanks for your help.

Disable the Norton firewall then try another speed test.

The same.

have you tried using a different cable to connect to the router?

also, if you have multiple comps hooked up, is the speed between them as good as when you p2p them? (in case you have a crossover cable at hand)

All I have are CAT5 or CAT5e cables - both give the same result.  The other remote computers are also at about 5.5 Mbps.

A 54G will help, it'll give you 54MB to deal with instead of wireless-B's 11MB, but that'll only fix another problem when you get this one stamped out.

Or, because you have gone over the limit in speed that they router can handle, maybe it's going unstable?

See if you can update your firmware.

I went out and bought a 54G Netgear WGR614V6 from BestBuy on sale at 29.99.  After configuring, updating firmware, and wasting time with tech support, I got no significant improvement.

Well, I decided to return the Netgear router to the store for credit, and replaced it with a Linksys BEFSR41wired router.  It really does the job!
