How to tweak 56k for downloading?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I recently reformatted my machine (WinXP SP2). Prior to it, I had tweaked my 56k connection and was getting consistent download speeds of 6.5Kbs. Now, without any tweaks, I'm getting around ~4.5-5Kbs. I was hoping you guys could help me out by suggesting settings that are good for downloading - as I can't seem to remember which tweaks I had used last time. I don't play any online games, so increased ping as an expense for faster downloads is not a problem. :) Looking forward to a response,

Thanks,

Paschendale

PS. Here's the test I did on this site just incase you need any info:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 43 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)

Download Speed is:: 5 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2)

Test Time:: Mon Oct 31 2005 21:27:04 GMT+1100 (AUS Eastern Standard Time)

Bottom Line:: 1X faster than 56K 1MB download in 204.8 sec

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 2.74 % of your hosts average (net.au)

Welcome to testmy.net Paschendale ;

First, what is your initial connect status(just click on your connection icon in your system tray.

(if I don't like my connect status, I just dis-connected and connect again ~ 'till I get at least a 49.2Kbps speed, sometimes I get a 53Kbps speed going.)

Next, dis-able your Hardware(modem) compression in your Internet Connection > Properties > Gerneral > (Connect using ~ your Modem) > Configure

set Maximum speed(bps) to 921600

[check] Enable hardware flow control

[check] Enable modem error control

[un-check] Enable moden compression

hit OK

goto Networking (still in Properties) and click Settings

under "Type of dial-up server I am calling" and

[check] Enable LCP extensions

[check] Enable software compression

[check] Negotiate multi-link for single link connections

hit OK

try those first, but remember to always re-start your computer for any changes to take effect.

later, we'll talk about some CableNut settings if you want.

(or just check out "New Dial-Up Record' in 'Show off Your Scores' forum

and see the different  settings I've used)

there are other Registry tweaks to help Web pages load faster, too.

Hey ROM-DOS,

My initial connection speed is either 50.6Kbps or 52Kbps - it varies between those two values, which I think indicates a fairly good connection.

I applied the settings you suggested and rebooted, and there is an increase in the test results, but only a slight one:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 45 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)

Download Speed is:: 5 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2)

Test Time:: Tue Nov 01 2005 10:21:34 GMT+1100 (AUS Eastern Standard Time)

Bottom Line:: 1X faster than 56K 1MB download in 204.8 sec

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 2.87 % of your hosts average (net.au)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-QTNDIX4ZW

Hopefully the CableNut settings will help me out,

Thanks for your help so far,

Paschendale

Paschendale ; If you start using CableNut, try VanBuren's(up-dated) settings for Xp,

but try using the low end of DSL settings. . .curious to see if that might help.

Good ISP connection speeds ~ that's almost Cap on dial-up. Good luck.

Hey guys,

Yes, I do have STAC compression enabled because it really helps with my ISP.

Well, I spent a lot of time trying different settings with Cablenut, TCP Optimizer, TweakMaster, Tuneup Utilities '06, Modem Booster etc. and I used tools to measure the performance of each set of tweaks - but what I found is that the default Windows settings seem to always be higher than the performance of any other tweak. This is what I'm getting with defaults:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 46 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)

Download Speed is:: 6 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2)

Test Time:: Wed Nov 02 2005 08:51:41 GMT+1100 (AUS Eastern Standard Time)

Bottom Line:: 1X faster than 56K 1MB download in 170.67 sec

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 2.95 % of your hosts average (net.au)

I'm guessing that this is pretty much as high as I will be able to go, if you guys have any additional settings please let me know.

Thanks,

Paschendale

HEY Paschendale ;

I'm off tomorrow(or it'll be today, when you read this ~ lol),

and I'll check some of my settings, again.

I still get good speeds on my C:Drive.

Here are my C: Drive CableNut settings, also.

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 169 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)

Download Speed is:: 21 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2)

Test Time:: Tue Nov 1 20:42:43 PST 2005

Bottom Line:: 3X faster than 56K 1MB download in 48.76 sec

Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 125.33 % faster than the average for host (nocharge.com)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-KHUE2BPCV

. . .was also wondering if you can ping past your ISP?

Cholla, nor myself can, that's why I was wondering.
