Hey guys.. Nice site you guys have here.. I have been reading some posts here about Dial-Up tips/speeds/etc.. Great stuff.. anyways, i tried some tips.. i have a 56k modem.. connects at 50.6kbps.. i disabled hardware compression. etc.. and did some tests.. here's what i got:

Welcome  mrkcee; it is a neat site(if you like tweaking and sharing/reading experiences).

Noticed your Test time (China Standard Time) , are you really testing from China?

If so, that might explain some of your speed results.

I 'seem' to get faster speed scores ~ using VanBuren's XP DSL low-end settings.

Good ISP connect status  :thumbsup:, (but distance to the US test servers will effect your test scores, not to mention China's Internet filtering protocal, for lack of a better censurable peoples resolution, . . .if you are connecting from 'The Peoples Republic'?)  :shrug:

You can download Cablenut_408_zipped.zip

here > http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1013.0;attach=64

and VanBurens_cablenut_settings_version_7_ALL_WIN_OS_AND_SAT.zip

here > http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1013.0;attach=2784

EDIT:

How do you use cablenut? ~ just click on the.ccs file you want to try and it will load into CableNut Adjuster, then press "Save to Registry", then "Done" ~ then re-start your computer for the 'new' settings to take effect.

For faster speeds I use Cable & DSL 512 128.ccs

I think this is it(my settings on my C:Drive)

I used to have Comcast HS cable and tweaked it past it's cap,

so when I went back to Dial-Up I just continued to tweak things.

(some settings probably just remained the same in my Registry)

. . .at first, I thought, am I just 'foolin' Windows ~ thinkin' it still

thinks I'm connected on HS cable ~ lol.

here's a link to a post I started;

"New 'Dial-up' Speed Record"

in "Show off your scores!"

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 181 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)

Download Speed is:: 22 kB/s

Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 141.33 % faster than the average for host (nocharge.com)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-04I6ELD83

but, of course, this is probably what I'm really running at;

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 62 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 386 kB)

Download Speed is:: 8 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2)

Here's some Registry tweaks, if your comfortable doing this. Just export the keys and save in some Registry Back-up folder in "My Documents" for back-up and enter the 'new' values in your Registry.

By default Windows  XP caches everything in the DNS cache service, both correct and faulty DNS lookups. To increase performance by eliminating the caching of faulty DNS lookups, change the following values from whatever their original values are to zero.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesDnscacheParameters]

"NegativeCacheTime"=dword:00000000

"NetFailureCacheTime"=dword:00000000

"NegativeSOACacheTime"=dword:00000000

This tweak will help web pages load faster, it has no real effect on download speeds, just helps your pc look up websites faster thereby speeding up how fast the page loads.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipServiceProvider

On the right  >  change these entries: (ALL values are HEXIDECIMAL)

Class - 1

DnsPriority - 1

HostsPriority - 1

LocalPriority - 1

NetbtPriority - 1

Max your Internet Explorer's simultaneous downloads to 20 (default is 2)

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings]

MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=  REG_DWORD        0x00000014 (20)

MaxConnectionsPerServer"=    REG_DWORD        0x00000014 (20)

Increase IoPageLockLimit (disk cache)

Note- Use the following settings depending on your system RAM:

    00020000 = 131072 KB (if RAM > 512 MB)

*00010000 =  65536 KB (if RAM > 256 MB)  < use this one if you have 512 MB of Memory - RAM

    00008000 =  32768 KB (if RAM > 128 MB)

    00004000 =  16384 KB (if RAM >  64 MB)

    00002000 =  8192 KB (if RAM >  32 MB)

    00001000 =  4096 KB (if RAM <  32 MB)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management]

"IoPageLockLimit"=dword:00010000

Optimize L2 Cache Detection (Manual)

Note: Change the setting depending on the L2 Cache of your CPU.

If you dont know the L2 cache of your CPU, use a freeware program like CPU-Z

    http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

  8192 KB = 00002000

  4096 KB = 00001000

  2048 KB = 00000800

  1024 KB = 00000400

  *512 KB = 00000200

  256 KB = 00000100

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management]

"SecondLevelDataCache"=dword:00000200

These are just some of the tweaks I use. . .see if they help.

MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server=  REG_DWORD        0x00000014 (20)

MaxConnectionsPerServer=    REG_DWORD        0x00000014 (20)

the digit 4 in the dword pretty much precludes it being binary, and hex 14 is dec 20...

I know the 2 above are DWords I was asking about the other tweak

        Class=1

    LocalPriority = 1

    HostsPriority = 1

    DnsPriority = 1

    NetbtPriority = 1

k, thought you meant the whole thing was binary. but then this looks weird too.

  LocalPriority = 1      Binary Value    looks like this    01 00 00 00

    HostsPriority = 2      Binary Value    looks like this      02 00 00 00

    DnsPriority = 3        Binary Value    looks like this      03 00 00 00

    NetbtPriority = 4    Binary Value    looks like this      04 00 00 00

the binary values for 1,2,3 and 4 would be 1, 10, 11 and 100 respectively.

so the 04 00 00 00 looks real weird...

resopalrabotnick : The tweak the one I have is supposed to set the priority order..The one you see most sets the priority of all of them to 1 but since they all can't have first priority At least I don't believe they can.

I could probably find the tweak on the web & post a link to it .The cablenut site says all should be 1.

To give an example I will put the original settings like they were before I did the tweak.

              Class          Binary Value    looks like this    8 00 00 00

    LocalPriority      Binary Value    looks like this    f3  01 00 00

    HostsPriority      Binary Value    looks like this      f4  01 00 00

    DnsPriority        Binary Value    looks like this      d0 07 00 00

    NetbtPriority      Binary Value    looks like this      d1 07 00 00

In Windows 9x & ME Binary Value is a seperate setting or category in the registry.There are 3 types

DWord,String Value & Binary Value .In DWord you can select Hexadecimal or Decimal.

The tweak seems to work like I have it for my OS I tried it all set to 1 & it didn't work as well for me.

But XP might work better all set to 1 I don't know.

well, your original values are hexadecimal, 4 bytes each. each byte is represented by a 2 digit hexadecimal value. binary it would be much longer, you would need 8 digits for each byte. that is mainly why the hexadecimal system is used in this context, it can elegantly represent the 256 (dec) possible values the sequence of 8 bits can represent in 2 alphanumeric digits, each with a value of 0 to f.

edit

I know the 2 above are DWords I was asking about the other tweak

        Class=1

    LocalPriority = 1

    HostsPriority = 1

    DnsPriority = 1

    NetbtPriority = 1

these look like boolean values to me, where they use only a single bit 0 or 1 to signify true or false, in this case off or on.

resopalrabotnick; The link is basically the same tweak I use but instead of 1,2,3,4 it uses 5,6,7,8.Or like some suggest like cablenut all set to 1.

Below is a description of registry settings in 9x & its the same in ME.
