Wireless Internet Problem

Ok so right now I'm at the University of Nebraska in the dorms. The school itself doesn't provide wireless internet, but my friend has a wireless router in our room so I use that. For the 1st two months while i was here my wireless internet has always been fine, with a "Excellent" signal strength. Well now the past few weeks my internet will work fine for 1/2 the day and for the other half my wireless internet signal will be "Low" and I won't even be able to use the internet. While the internet works it says signal strength is 54 Mbps, but when it doesn't work it says it's connected but the speed is only 1 Mbps. We have never moved the router around and my laptop is actually only 4 ft. from the router. The wierd thing is that the internet works fine, but then all of a sudden for no reason it will all of a sudden get a low signal and it will stay like that for a while. Sometimes an hour sometimes 5 hours...... I know it's not a problem with the hardware in my laptop because when I go home it works fine. Any ideas? Thanks
