kcity04 Posted November 28, 2004 CID Share Posted November 28, 2004 I've been using direcway satellite (dw6000) for about 1 year now. My upload speeds over the last week or so have fallen way down. Originally, I was getting in the 100Kbps uploads, which I could certainly live with, but now I'm at 6Kbps for uploads. Download speed is still "acceptible". I'm in a rural location and won't be getting dsl or cable this decade. I first noticed the problem when using the DW "satellite speed test". The upload portion of the test just didn't run. I called support and they were not much help. In fact, they directed me to testmy.net to try the upload test there rather than address their problem. When the testmy.net stats showed the slow upload speed, DW support fell back to plan B. "Its probably weather conditions in your area.", or, "Thats really what you should expect"!! Anybody have any insight into why the upload speeds at DW would have dropped recently? Here is my last test .. Upload Stats .. Connection is 6 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 386 KB) Upload Speed is 1 KB/s Tested From http//www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line 0 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 1024 second(s) Validation Link http//testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=L6EMIH1CR .. Guest wmmc Posted November 28, 2004 CID Share Posted November 28, 2004 OK, you do use sun java, like a lot of java based test sites they will not give you an accurate upload test result using sun java, their is one site that you can use sun java for accurate results but you have to be a member(with tool points) is http://www.dslreports.com/stest at Net@ccess. Mydirecway speed test is worthless if you use sun java, they want the users believe the speed they getting are amazing and its false if you see 100 + kbps, mydirecway isn't all that good anyway. But dont worry i get a very slow upload to i get around 5-8kbps. and download :::.. Guest wmmc Posted November 30, 2004 CID Share Posted November 30, 2004 .s1 the satellite uploads should help with page loads, I once had dialup(for about a month while awaiting to get satellite back) it took forever to load images with dialup, with satellite that is much better then dialup, when it works. Satellite blows away dialup in speeds, as said when it works, I have no trouble, its working great on this end, I am trying to help as best as I can here or anywhere else for that matter who may need it. Not everyone is capable of CABLE, DSL or WISP, I live 12 miles from town, there is a CO 26,400 feet from me but it has no DSL capabilities, the billionaire comment comes to mind here as well. The Reverend Posted November 30, 2004 CID Share Posted November 30, 2004 Concerning your "mystery" slow speed, if you are using a DW6000 modem, SOMETIMES they can still connect to the Internet (but terribly slow like a 56k or less), and DirecWay has no clue. What happens to the DW6000 is that it is very sensitive to power 'fluxes', and if enough power fluxes occur over a certain amount of milliseconds (even if you have surge protection ...or even with a battery-supplied power backup that "holds you steady" ...it's not sensitive enough for some reason), there is the outside chance it will mess up the functioning of logic circuitry inside the danged thing. This has happened to me twice in one month. Try unplugging the thing for no less than 10 minutes, then fire 'er up again and see if that doesn't cure your problem. I have the answer i needed and additional information more than i had expected. I will have to stick with satellite for the foreseable future unless i move back to town (austin, tx). Then i could consider cable or dsl. maybe there is BPL in my future. Thanks again. ($1,000 down for the gear and installation, then $129.95 a month ....dang man, that's over $1500 annually for Internet)! Nothing to brag about there! RIPOFF!! I don't care if it's their best or not, it still isn't worth the bucks ...but I had little to no choice but to either get it, or (literally) have to move to someplace in the 21st century. Here's my test log from just a few moments ago. Overcast but Signal Strength is still 96 out of a possible 97. Only six users online @ testmy.net ....and I was pleased to get the following: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 952 Kbps about 1 Mbps (tested with 748 KB) Download Speed is:: 116 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 17 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 8.83 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/auth_check.cgi?num=252525 My "up" averages 256kbps or higher during times of low congestion, but I have the Commercial Setup (and am paying dearly for it)! However, when my modem 'acts up' it will fall off to about 50kbps ...which is my first clue that the DW6000 needs a major power recycle to "bleed off" all capacitor charges (like I was trying to say earlier). (#5376) A: 1. One tweak for upload speed is to turn Path MTU Discovery to YES in DrTCP. Without this switch turned on, Windows treats the Satellite Upstream path as a dial-up path, and changes the MTU for the path to 576, regardless of what you have the MTU set for on the adapter. By turning Path MTU Discovery on, Windows will see that the upstream path minimum MTU is 1460-1500 bytes, and will adjust accordingly. - PD 2. A registry tweak has been found and tested to improve upload speeds on Satellite Return Systems. The only problem is that it only pertains to certain operating systems, with certain processors, with certain amounts of memory. This tweak requires modifying the registry, so please be sure to back up your registry before doing any of these modifications. This tweak has been extensively tested, and has not shown any signs of being problematic with any system.
