What mode should my NIC card be in?

My friend has some dedicated line to his house. It's not a T1 but it's nice 100% reliable and he gets the exact up/down speeds he pays for.

He changed a few settings like MTU and all that to achieve his speeds, but I noticed he changed from half duplex to full duplex mode.

Does that make a difference? How do I know what mine should be at? I don't want to change it and screw something up, but I can't help but be curious  :o
