  1. Hi,

    When I logged on today i selected firefox and it asked my which profile i wanted to use(something i have never seen before) there was only one listed "Default" I selected default and it said this profile is already running(IT wasnt) so i made a new profile and managed to get into fire fox. My problem now is I can get into firefox but none of my bookmarks etc are in there as i am stuck in the new profile. Does anyone have any idea how i can switch back to the original profile? i cannot see any buttons to select this and the help section doesnt really tell me anything. IT is firefox 1.0.1.

    Cheers

  2. Update.

    I have now tried the motherboard setup outside of any case, the problem is still there. I reset the BIOS and the pc started to runas per normal i set the bios up, rebooted and it got as far as the xp screen then shut down. Every time i restart it does the same sometimes it gets slighty further eg 5-6 secs more but it always shuts down before getting to the desktop. I cannot fathom this out, why would just changing the case cause all these problems?  I am wondering about the power supply, could it be that it is not quite powerful enough? would that cause these symptoms?

    Thanks for your help

    Cheers

  3. ok,

    update, i replaced everything putting back just the minimum needed to run the system to eliminate other components causing the problem. The siren type beeping has now stopped. The pc starts to boot but after 5 secs it shuts down I cannot  get it to do anything other than run for 5 secs. Any clues?

  4. Hi,

    I have just replaced my case and now when i start the pc (Asus A7N266-VM Board, Athlon xp 2000 cpu 512k ram) i get an annoying siren type noise from the on board speaker and the pc shows nothing on the screen. Any idea why it would be doing this i am presuming something has been put back wron but i have double checked and it still does it.

  5. Cheers  swimmer, it would seem the problem has been fixed after the third total installation of the card. I have done spyware checks with adaware, spybot and microsoft anti and i have none on this pc. God only knows what went wrong as it has been working fine for months. Must have been a software issue somewhere. I hope it has gone for good :D

    Many thanks for all the help

  6. Thanks for the help. ok, update on the problem. I can ping my isp when the browser is not working i can also receive new email through thunderbird. I tried all of the available pc card drivers and it does the same with any of them. I tried an old11mb  sitecom card i have and that works fine so i now know it is the card. Could it be that the card is faulty or do you think i just need to sort out the software issue?

    Cheers

  7. Sorry, yes it is a wireless network running a D-link Di-624 Router and Airplus wireless cards. I cannot see that it is anything wrong with the hardware as i can sit an exact replica of my system next to it running on the same network and everything works fine. I thought maybe a virus so i have scanned with AVG and trend online and nothing is found. I am running XP Pro Sp2 by the way.

    Thanks

  8. Hi,

    I have rather a strange problem with my laptop. When i try to get web pages most of the time it works but sometimes it says it cannot find the page i have requested. All of the other pcs on the same network work perfectly so i know it is something to do with the laptop only. I am running firefox but i have the same problem with opera or IE6. It seems like the browser is not getting through to the network as there is no network activity lights when it is malfunctioning, yet turn the pc  off and back on and hey presto it usually works. The network is connected and fully functional as i can see all the opther pcs and get files from them, i can even download my email its just the browser. Does anyone have an answer for me, its really beginning to bug me.

    Thanks

  9. Hi,

    thanks for the quick reply, repairing does not seem to work, occasionally it does say it is connected but in a very random way. I am thinking there is a problem somehwere with the software for the device. Is there any way to remove the icon in the system tray and stop it telling me it is not connected? then it would not bother me.

    Thanks

  10. I have a d-link DWL120 wireless adaptor attached to my legacy free IPAQ, when you turn the pc on it tells me no connection can be made to the network, the signal strength meter is at full and i can surf the web and access the network. It is just very annoying to have a little box pop up every 1 minute to tell you it has no connection. The network icon in the system tray has a X through it(Yet everything works) any ideas on how i could fix this? i have tried uninstalling and reinstallling.

    thanks

  11. Hi Guys,

    I have just done the broadband reports tweak test, i adjusted everything it recommended using DRTCP then saved, exited and rebooted. Upon restarting i then did the tweak test again and it is suggesting exactly the same as before like the settings didnt take. I have been through this five times and it never seems to work. Any ideas what i might be doing wrong?

    Thanks

  12. My results, they seem quite abnormal but then that is just my connection...ABNORMAL :cry: Any idea why the first test is so much lower than the second?

  13. an update......

    i got hold of my WISP today, they have given me a new bridge as they have experienced problems with the one i was using. Apparently i should only be getting 1mb max even though they advertise 2mb. Their router is set to only give out upto 1mb max to each client with a 1mb bank for when the system is maxxed out. They also said it might be worth playing with the fragmentation and RTS threshold. They are currently set at 2346 and 2432, what would changing these do? and any recommendations on what to change them too?

    thanks

  14. Hi Guys,

    thanks for the advice, I know how slow it is i have to live with it :( especially wheni am paying the equivilent of $60pm for this service. I have spoken to a couple of other people on the same service today and it seems they suffer the same problems. Some days i get no service at all!!! i am beginning to wonder why i changed from dial-up. I think some serious sorting out needs to be done at my isp end as they are not offering anything near what they promise. The thing is when i first got this i was getting bang on 2mb, so they have managed to change something!!! I will keep you all posted as to what they say and see if i can sort this out.

    cheers

  16. Hi Guys,

    My service is so slow. Not sure what i should be doing to tweak my pc. The ISP i use is a fixed wireless service called Turboweb in the UK, they publish rates of 2Mb download and 256k upload. They get their service via Aramiska sattalite. Anyway here are my results of the test using Win XP pro:-

    :::.. Download Stats ..:::

    Connection is:: 321 Kbps about 0.3 Mbps (tested with 386 KB)

    Download Speed is:: 39 KB/s

    Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

    Bottom Line:: 6 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 26.26 second(s)

    Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=TI2O9MIV6

    :::.. Upload Stats ..:::

    Connection is: 212 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 386 KB)

    Upload Speed is: 26 KB/s

    Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

    Bottom Line: 4 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 39.38 second(s)

  17. Hi Guys,

    In an attempt to upgrade my system to 54g i have changed my router from a linksys 11b to the d-link di-624 extreme g rev c with latest firmware. I use a wireless broadband service and connect via a wet 11 bridge. My problem:- The router seems fine, all lights do as they should it hands out ip addresses fine and all pcs on the network can see each other but i can not seem to get any internet activity. It will not ping anything not even the wet 11. I sent the d-link back and it was returned as they said there was no fault. Any ideas on what i could try to get this working. If i put the old linksys back with exactly the same settings it works perfectly :mad:

    thanks

    Martyn
