I recently re-installed a game called Nox (that I have been playing since 2001) after taking a 6 month break. During those 6 months, I got a better computer. Gateway Intel Pentium 4, 200gb hard drive, 1024 MB RAM, 3.2ghz processor, etc. I noticed that when I host a game, everybody lags alot, and when I join other servers, I am the only one lagging (and when I used to play on my old comp 6 months ago, I never lagged). The lag consists of constant spiking, short timeouts, etc.
My old computer was a crappy hp intel pentium 3 with 800mghz and 392mb ram, 27gb hard drive.
I asked a friend and he told me to do the speed tests on this site. So I did the Smartest for download and upload and here are the results: (I have Cable Internet and my ISP is Videotron, a Quebec company).
Download: I used to score 256 kb/s but now I always score about 500 kb/s. I asked my friend to do this test (he has the exact same internet as me and only lives about 5 minutes away) and he scored over 1000 kb/s...I believe something's wrong here.
Upload: I used to score about 22 kb/s but now I always score about 60 kb/s. I got that same friend to do the test and he scored about double. I scored higher than videotron.ca (my isp) but much lower than typical cable and dsl. What I don't understand is, I scored more than the average users of my ISP (videotron.ca). But my friends that have the same ISP as me (also cable internet) score double and sometimes triple my scores.
I scanned my computer with Ad-aware, Spybot, CCleaner and Norton Anti-Virus 2k3 and found some spyware and adware and deleted all of it. The rest of it has to be deleted at system startup.
I tried calling my ISP but they always put me on hold forever so I gave up. I tried power cycling my modem and router but it still doesn't change anything.
I am running on Windows XP Home edition.
