  1. My family is signing up for Xplornet Wireless (after using their Ku-band satellite for two years, I am forcibly against this, but its either this or dialup (and I have a dialup modem just in case ;) )) and I was wondering which options are favourable to change in the SM config. The only things I can think of after reading the SM manual are NAT (so my router gets an IP from the AP and not the SM), and setting power control to normal, so there isnt an 18dB attenuation. Is there anything Im missing? I'm trying to read up as much as possible beforehand, so I know what Im getting myself into.

Also, there is a site mentioned in the Manual that sells the override plugs:

    http://best-tronics.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=BMI&Product_Code=BT-0583

Unfortunately I dont have a credit card, so I cant order one and see what the quality is like, but I would assume they at least work.

  2. Im at his house now. They said that there's nothing that they can do, as they installed the attenuator and thats whats best for us. Bastards. But yeah, is there any way to use a smaller attenuator or another modem that can handle the higher voltages?

  3. Must be the time of day? Its 10:41AM here, and now things have picked up.

That's the speed test that I just did. Problem is, my speeds have dropped to around that area, and I cant get them to go any higher. I havent done any optimizations yet, so Im working on cablenut. I just wanted a record of before & after.

  6. Im spending a week at my cousins house, so this is his cable, not mine. Anyways, when cable was laid in their area, it was set up for a subdivision, but it was never built. He has the massive cable running into their house. Its so fast, infact, that they need an attenuator to drop the voltage/whatever going into the modem so that it doesnt fry. My question is: can you buy smaller attenuators, or a better modem, that will allow for faster speeds?

The day they got it, my cousin removed the attenuator and had speeds of 700kb/s and higher, but the modem burnt out in a day and a half (flashing red lights, no connection). Right now, we get around 100-150kb/s, and its obvious that it can go higher.

  7. Thanks for the friendly welcome.

Your connection is: 26 Kbps or 0.03 Mbps

    You Downloaded at: 3 kB/s

You are running: 0 times faster than 56K and can Download 1 megabyte in 341.33 second(s)

Diagnosis ^info^: May need help : running at only 2.01 % of your hosts average (barrettxplore.com)

This was tested from a 97 kB file and took 30.687 seconds to complete

Normally its around 100k/s though, but Im having troubles with my router at the moment (DD-WRT keeps effing up). That upload is what I always get though, so I know thats not a router problem (tested with and without router)

Not bad for a 1000/256 package eh ;) . Damn greedy Xplornet, what a ripoff. Thats the best it gets too.
