Hi all,
I have wireless router/modem for my Dsl and i need to know is there any way i can change the routers's MTU which is 1500 by default. Would changing the routers default MTU help in connection stability? I had the same model before which i had it replaced as it was dropping speed quite frequently and i had to power cycle on daily basis to maintain the speed. The dropouts werent that big but 150-200 kbps drop fall matters to me, I use wired connection for my Pc, P4/ 2.4 ghz/ 1.2gb ram/160 gb hdd and have win xp2.
If, in my case, changing the router's Mtu canl help in maintaining the speed, how can that be done? I checked the routers config in the setup and couldn't find any setting to alter the mtu value. Since there is no firmware update available for this model, i can't be sure how to resolve this issue.
Pc is free of virus and all kind of malware/virus etc. Hard drive defragmented almost daily thru perfect disk, registry's cleaned, modem is way away from all electrical devices.
What could be the reason? Any clue? I still am facing speed fluctuation but now its not as bad as before .. discussed with bell sympatico's techs and all they had to say was to virus check, cut down software from start up and all ......... the universal guideline for ISP techs for the clients. In the end "snowfall" was to be held accountable for my speed drop. Just want to see if changing the MTU of router helps? Any one having or had situation like this?
Await for any help that i can get, thanks.

Hi all,
Well i am @3000/800 kbps profile and this is what i got from testmy.net speedtest.
:::.. Download Stats ..:::
Download Connection is:: 2932 Kbps about 2.9 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)
Download Speed is:: 358 kB/s
Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (Server 2)
Test Time:: 2007/01/20 - 1:19am
Bottom Line:: 51X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 2.86 sec
Tested from a 2992 kB file and took 8.36 seconds to complete
Download Diagnosis:: Looks Great : 8.71 % faster than the average for host (bell.ca)
D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-8QCG4O9ER
User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1 [!]
And before taking this test i cleared out all the temp files/ cookies and plus had cc cleaner and purge fox do their job just to avoid any cache-oriented result/s.
I usually get from 2.7meg upto 3.4 mbps depending on the hour of the test done.
But the funny part is whenever i take download test from speakeasy.net or download any file from bell sympatico's server i never exceed more than 315KB/s on average i.e. @ 40% completion of the download. Tried many tweaks and registry amendment but all in vain.
Try these places to know exactly what speed you are are getting, i atleast calculate mine from here. Just stop the downloading @ 40% and multiply the KB/s that you get with 8.19 and you will get your result in kbps. Like for me is 315KB/s i.e. 315 x 8.19 = 2579.85 (rounded to 2580kbps).
ftp://download.sympatico.ca/modem/AlcatelDrivers1_6.exe
If you want to try out with a larger file ..
ftp://download.sympatico.ca/BS/SH-EF-031_Win.zip
Another place/s to try out are
-https://www.speedguide.net/speedtest/test.php?m_id=23
So far i haven't found any test web site where i can actually get my exact download speed results as many factors are involved but these sites are pretty close to reality as far as i am concerned.
If anyone has any better site for the download test or any means to enhance my download speed capability, All suggestions are welcome and i will be grateful.

:::.. Download Stats ..:::
Download Connection is:: 2874 Kbps about 2.9 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB)
Download Speed is:: 351 kB/s
Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (Server 1)

Bottom Line:: 50X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 2.92 sec
Tested from a 12160 kB file and took 34.656 seconds to complete
Download Diagnosis:: Looks Great : 3.27 % faster than the average for host (bell.ca)

The question: is "Packet queuing detected" a bad news? If so what could possibly be the remedy. Another thing is i wanted to know that when i download an average size file from bell's server i can't exceed more than 313-315KB/s max whereas i have tweaked the tcp/ip, afd and netbt registries accordingly. Plus test taken from speakeasy.net also never exceeds more than 2525-2550 kbps which confirms the download speed with bell's server. Is this the best am i gonna achieve?
I am not an expert in any way or fashion but just want to make the most of my connection and any suggestion/s or guideline/s would mean alot to me.
Best regards,

Like i said before, i usually get 2.7 mbps upto 3+ mbps from different servers @ different timings but to me blazing browsing matters .. un cached that is.
