Ok Aubrey, here's a question.
Why is it that everytime I call DirecWay tech support (in India of course) they always have me do the frequency switch thing? I finally got an installer to come out and replace all the outside gear and he recommissioned it on SatMex 5 because that is the only one he could point it to. He told me I'd do better on (oh I forgot the sames...1A8 and G5 or something like that) but he'd have to come out and remount the dish. After several hours, my download was only at 250k but the upload was finally between 100 and 200. I've never even seen it over 45! So, the nice Indian man had me trying all kinds of frequencies around the 1230 that it defaults to. I noticed that SatMex 5 is supposed to be 1270 but he tried all kinds of frequencies around that. One of them (1170 I believe) gave me a whopping 92 on signal strength and 99 on Cross pol, but he didn't choose that one. In the end, I ended up with 85 down and 28 up!!! I finally did the installer setup myself putting it back to 1270 and last night got speeds around 1100 down and 200 up. This morning I am back to 250 down and 100 up! My question is: Why, when I change the frequency to re-commission it and it shows 92 and 99 cross poll does it revert back to 1230 and 70 for signal strength when it is done commissioning? What is the point of them trying different frequencies if you can't use any of them? My installer told me they were different transponders and only 1 on SatMex 5 is working with the 7000 right now. I don't see why, if I can get such a good signal and cross poll that I can't use that frequency and it will lock in unless the NOC has something to do with changing it or that frequency doesn't work with the 7000. This is always baffling to me because no one has ever explained it to me before. Should I just get the installer to move the dish to one of the dedicated satellites? I will not tollerate 250 downloads during the day for what I have to pay. Please explain, if you know, what all those frequencies really mean and which ones can be used with SatMex 5.
Thanks,
Patrick
This isn't making a lot of sence... normally you cannot comission to a satellite that you aren't assigned to. the only thing you can do is change frequency. So I don't undersatnd how you are accomplishing that. the only way I know of is to call DW & get the right department. I have tried pointing to a satellite that i wasn't commisioned to & I get a fine signal through setup, bat as soon as you are done it drops.

Wow!!! I thought I was going to get swamped! Oh well, maybe I'm just speaking too soon
-
The big slow down you are talking about is because the Satellite you are on is just plain too busy to give you good speeds. This is DW's problem, & for that matter the problem with a lot of Satellite based communications. They like to cram as many people as they can onto each "Bird". I am on G3C & don't really notice much of a slowdown during peak hrs. So what I am trying to say is that, I doubt they have any motivation to "fix" that problem.

Hey all. You probably don't remember me at all, but I have been a member here for over a year & have posted a little from time to time, but have not really been active. I first got my DW in the fall of 2004 in Southern Oregon USA. Then in april of 2005 I moved to Northern California & took my system with me & installed it myself.

Yeah, that would be a problem! I use port 83 on my DW4000. I can't remember where I got that tweak from...
-
lol, that is just about it!!! The interesting thing is that I think I have talked to the same guy each time! For a real shocker, I think I got the same guy when I called DELL support!!!!!!

Now I like this! I just changed my MTU from 1460 to 1500 & the TCP Recieve Window from 256960 to 513920 just like ccr1958 has his. & it seems to have helped!

I think the DW6000 is a bad choice if you want halfway descent speeds. I was tempted to upgrade but I am now glad I have kept the 4000. The 6000 is nicer for networking but with a good router on the 4000 you can do fine. here are legit speeds from my tweaked DW. :::.. Download Stats ..:::

Sattelite is nice only if it is your only option. If DSL, Cable or other broadband is available use it! The latency on sattelite is a drawback & so is the upload speed. Oh & another thing, the fair access policy stinks like "jsun" said...
I have exeeded it also Esp with a download accelerator. Bad weather can also be a problemI disagree , I used the newest DirecWay set up and hit well over 500K they lame thing is the FAP (Fair Acess Policy) You can only DL 150mb per hour or something like that. I have 6mb/s cable now and will not switch,

I have DirecWay sattelite (White dish 2 way) internet & have great speeds. Here is a test I just did. https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=P1ENNR1MM
You will need to try to work with your tec support (as hard as it is) I know I've done it I hate talking to someone who can't speak english well!
But I had bad speeds untill I complained about it. I have also had to adjust my dish myself (There is some good info here
http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/5458
I have also tweaked my sattelite. Here is some more good info http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/satellite#4
This upped my speed by an average of 200 Kbps connection speed & about 20KB/s download. So my point is that DirecWay is a great system with poor tech support. Don't give up on it yet.
Oh, & btw my sister does web hosting on our DirecWay with no probs!
Let me know what happens.
