  1. Thanks for that.

The line is quiet with an occasional crackle with the router off. Swapping the filter did not make any difference. Plugging direct into the master socket seemed to solve the problem - the speed shot up to 1900. But that was not sustained. Now it's back down to around 500 even though the cable is connected directly to the master socket. The variability is unpredictable. Is Tiscali congestion the problem? Would switching to, say Fast.co.uk make a big difference?

  2. Hi, Here is some data from the Draytek Vigor router. I hope it helps.

  3. Hi Roco,

Yes, I'm in the UK with Tiscali - Pipex - Homecall as Anytime Broadband up to 8Mb.

Tonight the speed using TestMyNet was 485.

Using the Tiscali site it was 511 -  "Your current bandwidth reading is: 511.10kbps"

Over the weekend I am going to connect using the Homecall router rather than my Draytek Vigor to see if the router settings need adjusting or if the problem is the line. I will post details of my tests.

  4. Gosh, that was a fast reply!

I ran the programme on both computers and tried disconnecting both the landline telephones.

Sadly the result is the same.

  5. Hi all,

My so called DSL broadband speed is 129kbps on both my computers. Yep, you read that right - 129kbps. Not long ago it was as reasonable 2000. I have run Registry Mechanic, System Optimizer, PC Optimizer, deleted cookies, past history etc etc. Nothing has helped. My XP computer which is connected by a short cable to a Vigor router and my Vista computer connected by a longer ethernet cable both give the same pathetic results. Here are the figures.

  7. Sorry, let me clarify.

3600 Mhz computer with a download speed of around 2000kbps

300 Mhz computer with a download speed of around 100kbps

Both a connected to the same router - the faster computer by a short ethernet cable, the slower one by a longer ethernet cable.

    Yes, it's broadband.

  8. Hi everybody.

The download speed on my main computer (chip speed 3600) running on XP is fairly reasonable at about 2000 - limited by the telephone wire it comes down, I'm afraid. However, the download speed on a second computer (chip speed 300) running on ME and connected to my router by an ethernet cable is absolutely dreadful at about 100.

My Router is a Vigor and the ethernet cable is not long - about 12 feet.

Both computers have been optimised for broadband connection and I've run all the usual checks - spyware, temp files, cache etc.

Is the problem due to the ancient second computer, ethernet cable or the router? How can I rectify the problem - buy a new computer??

I would be most appreciative for any help.

    Thanks

    Doccy D
