Deastbrook Posted January 12, 2006 CID Share Posted January 12, 2006 I just installed Cablenut and tweaked my system according to FallowEarth's sticky and I increased my speed dramatically. I installed all the recommended software; ie spybot, lavasoft, CCleaner, Cablenut, Avast!. Also recommended was a firewall with the two suggested being those by Outpost and Sygate. I am not really sure what firewalls do. Could someone give me a quick rundown on them and on which one is a good one. Thanks
Swimmer Posted January 12, 2006 CID Share Posted January 12, 2006 Firewalls... The basic idea is to restrict communication between trusted hosts and untrusted host. They can block ports, not respond to outside pings, and other functions. There are two types of firewalls: Hardware and software There is alot to these.. http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Firewalls-101.html that is a pretty good overview of what firewalls can do and why they are important. BTW Windows firewall doesnt count.. it only scans incomming traffic.. you want one that scans both.
