Help Tweak Charter 10Mb/1Mb

NexusOne

Recommended Posts

I just got charters new 10Mb/1Mb service.

The upload is fine but the download... not quite as high as I would like.

Here is my info.

OS: Windows XP Pro SP2/Athlon MP 2800/2Gig System Memory

ISP: Charter Communications

Speed Package: 10Mb/1Mb

Installed Tweak Software: Cablenut using the OOL profile.

MTU = 1500

MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460

Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 921600

RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 4 bits (scale factor of 8 )

Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 57600

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.

Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:

513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8 )

256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)

128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 36864 kbps (4608 KBytes/s) @ 200ms

Your TCP Window limits you to: 14745.6 kbps (1843.2 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 53 hops

TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 01011100 (92)

Precedence (priority) = 010 (immediate)

Delay = 1 (low delay)

Throughput = 1 (high throughput)

Reliability = 1 (high reliability)

Cost = 0 (normal cost)

Check bit = 0 (correct, 8th checking bit must be zero)

DiffServ (RFC 2474) = No valid DiffServ equivalent

maybe a few more files to try but i just wanna see something.  try this file and post the results and statistics back from this site again( http://miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/ ) and i should know a file that might make it better and we can do some more testing at different sites to see if you can download at that speed from anywhere but distance might be limiting your speed to here.  we'll see ;)

Ya know whats odd... I have tried lots of different speed tests and none show that I'm getting my full speed.

But when I jump on the newsgroup to get um educational material it shows i'm downloading at 1300KB/sec....

I think the distance thing might be whats throwing off the speed tests.

The charter speed test doesnt have that option once the test is done.

I did however find one closer than the one Charter hosts in Michigan.

the problem is not the TCP settings, cos its almost the same result with every file you use. So that makes me think there is a problem with your modem or NIC.

also try this 12MB testfile http://www.testmy.net/tools/test/d_load.php?ni=1&tt=1&s=12160&st=st&ta=&top=

try this aswell

start-cmd-pathping testmy.net

wait several minutes and do not use the connection before the test is done.

hehe i did the pathping earlier today while i was scratching my head.

I don't think it's the nic since i get the same results with my other pc's.

I'm attaching the pathping results as a txt file so it doesnt loose the formatting.

Here are the results of the 12mb file.

i dont think the ping package drop has something to do with your speed issue, cos if you drop 69% of your TCP packages aswell, then your speed would be like Dial up hehe

The modem you have handle the speed, but it might need a new firmware

try this

unplug power to your modem, leave the modem unplugged for atleast 3 Minutes

then start it up again

check speed again

Ok, I shut the modem off for a few minutes (heh watching a movie, almost forgot to turn it back on) and it's back on.

I logged into the modem and verified that it was still recieving the 10Mb/1Mb config file from charter.

I'm getting the same results though...
