Rosko Posted August 8, 2006 CID Share Posted August 8, 2006 Hey everyone. Found this forum last night and was amazed with the information. Thanks for taking the time. I read the sticky's that were posted and have done everything from start to finish. Even started off not two days ago with a fresh copy of windows. Have Mcafee virus scan installed/updated. ZoneAlarmPro installed/updated. Lavasoft adware, Spybot S&D, spyware blaster, and CCleaner all updated. My computer skills doesn't compare with most on this site but would consider myself the average user. Keep that in mind when replying please lol. Anyways guys heres my problem. Several months ago i got verizon dsl. The 768/128kb's package. Had the computer in my front room. Was extremely slow. Dial up slow. After trying what i knew to do and contacting verizon nothing worked. Well one night i got bored and decided to do some rearranging and moved it into the bedroom. Didn't change a thing with my system but my speeds went from dial up to my max now which is 24 or 25kb's. Was satisfied for a while since it was faster then before. But not now. My max speed with a 768kb's download should be in the 80's i believe. Thats what i read at least. I've reinstalled verizon, windows, uninstalled zone alarm... im stuck with no clue. Just got off the phone with verizon and was told everything was fine and normal. Running windowsxp with a 2.2g celeron. Gig of ram. Geforce5600 video card. Asus P4P800s mother board. Using the Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet that came with it. It's a westell 6100 modem that was sent from verizon. I tried a few of the tweaks that were posted but will admit i dont really understand how that works. The adjuster program i mean. Here are my results from the testmy.net: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Download Connection is:: 205 Kbps about 0.21 Mbps (tested with 579 kB) Download Speed is:: 25 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/08/07 - 5:30pm Bottom Line:: 4X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 40.96 sec Tested from a 579 kB file and took 23.188 seconds to complete Download Diagnosis:: May need help : running at only 3.53 % of your hosts average (verizon.net) D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-OP1U6IV74 User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1) [!] :::.. Guest philp Posted August 8, 2006 CID Share Posted August 8, 2006 They need to come out and check your line. When I first got DSL, I was supposed to get 1.2 megs max. Couldn't get over 350k at first. They came out, did some checks and fnally got me to almost 700. Said that was as good as it was going to get since I was so far from the central office or hub. I was happy anyway. Until I discovered cable.
droner Posted August 8, 2006 CID Share Posted August 8, 2006 Had DSL before and Know a few who still have it...most problems with dsl belong to how far you are from the actual dsl switch....When i had dsl...384 down was max advertised...i was 14000 feet away from switch with 130 down...my brother in law was 7000 and had max. I haven't dsl for awhile but I hear that most phone companies are putting in repeaters to try to compete with cable. I actual had an offer for DSL my my local phone comany for 9.95 per month....50 times slower than cable....lol
Rosko Posted August 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted August 8, 2006 Yeah i'm going to switch to cable soon enough. But check this... A friend told me to switch the phone cord between the modem and the walljack. I did. Then the modem internet light wouldn't come back on. So i put back the original one that was in it before. That for some reason gave me faster download. My test results went from the above to : :::.. Download Stats ..::: Download Connection is:: 245 Kbps about 0.25 Mbps (tested with 579 kB) Download Speed is:: 30 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/08/07 - 8:09pm Bottom Line:: 4X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 34.13 sec Tested from a 579 kB file and took 19.328 seconds to complete Download Diagnosis:: May need help : running at only 4.22 % of your hosts average (verizon.net) D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-RFUDT7KWP User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1) [!] 5kbs difference from unplugging it and plugging it back in? Maybe i'll keep doing it...
Rosko Posted August 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted August 8, 2006 This is almost getting comical... Changed the wire between modem and phone jack to another phone line i found. :::..
