ReInstaling windows and verizon

Hey all, Been a big fan of this site for a while, So I thought hmmm maybe they can help. lol...

.....OK, I have had verizon for a year up here in Maine. The service was better for me than Adelphia Because I am an avid online gamer, and verizons pings were lower for me as well as the upload was a little bigger.

I join MTCO servers to play and always had pings in the 30's and 40's(my ping to the server).

....So I reinstalled windowsXP as i usually do once a year or so to clean the pc up and just reinstall what I am still using.

My problem is that now that I have reinstalled windowsXP (with all the tweaks I have always used, (mostly Vanburens)

my pings are almost double. From 30-40ms before the install to 70-80ms after.

I noticed that not all the net stuff I use is affected. Ventrilo, a voip service still has a nice low ping. So I started testing anything and everything to try to find out what was going on with the high pings in my online games.

...Long story short I found that my problem was my route to the MTCO server. my pings in the traceroute stay in the 30s till it hits ..152.63.0.177 (0.so-2-2-0.TL2.CHI2.ALTER.NET)  Then it jumps to the 150ms range.

....I also have been getting Delays in web page loading.. A page will load fine then the next cant be displayed so I hit refresh or click the link again and it loads. Also Like to run trace route, it stalls much longer  sending and recieving info.(even though upload and download seem to test fine).

....I guess I'm looking for a couple of things. First the dumb question I gotta ask, Did reinstalling windows change my route to the game server somehow? Or could other factors make me ping fine up till that IP I mentioned above?

....As for the browser hang problem, I don't know what I could have missed setting up windows again to cause this but it does somehow seem windows related, since when the page decides to load it seems fast, it just hangs for a bit before it loads. I am quite certain I have no virus or spyware. I check everyday.

...I am using a linksys wrt54gs router in PPPoe/ gateway mode, and the modem is a Westell 2200 in bridge mode with dhcp server off. The funny part is that all the problems I mentioned were worse when I used the modem alone for the PPOE connection. I never used to have a problem setting up either way. Now it seems I have to use the Linksys ppoe setup just to get it to test well on this site.....any Info that might make a light bulb go off for me would be a great help.

...I will note that a friend mentioned maybe skipping service pack 1 and just going straight to service pack 2 was an issue, but I dunno about that.....If you call tech support for Verizon all you get is some kid telling you all your problems are service pack2 related and that you shouldnt run it. Well I used it all this time with no problems or viruses, while my friend was being infected with all kinds using service pack 1.

....BTW this is the MOST ACCURATE test site I've used for actual up/down speeds Thanx :D

hey RMN-TruexJr and welcome to the forum :)

the tweaks wont affect ping, try this

start-run-cmd

type pathping testmy.net and hit enter

now wait for several minutes for ito complete

when done, rightclick, choose all and hit enter

now paste all in a new post

Well.....I have an Update....I fixed my problems. I Think lol.... I knew if I kept reading forum posts I would find something..

....My browser problem turned out to be crappy DNS servers from Verizon. I found a post that talked about a program called Treewalk. This program solved that problem fast!!!!....any info good or bad about Treewalk, let me know.

....as for my game problems, I found out that the game I play has a glitch. If you host a lan game with it, then try to join an online server, the data rate/size doesnt change back to cable/dsl. So when I was joining my server my data rate/size was still set for lan-32  instead of cable/dsl 14. So I loaded up the game and went in like I was gonna host, then I set the connection to cable/dsl and BAM!! 20-40ms instead of 70ms lol.

So anyway I still have to thank you guys for the great website, since it did solve my problems (once I had time to read through dozens of posts :D

....Again any opinions/info on Treewalk would be great. As of right now, I would highly recomend it. No more Browser hang/hitches for me.

....Um, I also discovered something odd/cool when messing with Vanburens CableNut tweaks. My connection is 380 up and 1500 down so I always used those tweaks accordingly. Just for giggles I saw the fiber-optic settings and noticed one said 1.5mbs, so I tried it.....My speeds seem better than ever!!! Dunno why but I like that setting better than the PPPoe 380/1500. Am I crazy? lol

Here are those results anyway..........

thanks for reporting back, im glad it works now  :D

The fiberoptic file, has a small TcpWindowsize, and that might be the key for some dsl users having problems with cablenut tweaks, i will try that later on and might add a new version of my tweaks

keep visiting and tell your friends about this site
