  1. I think I may have the hot setup (pardon the pun) for lightning control. Being an ex-CB nut, I still have a 25 foot tower with a 5/8 wave ground plane antenna and on the coax coming down from the antenna I have a lightning arrestor that ties into the center conductor of the coax and the other side goes to ground. We tend to have extremely powerful lightning hits here in the mountains of Western NM to the point of blowing apart 150 year old pinion trees (I actually witnessed this and it scared the crap out of me). Anyway, the lightning arrestor bleeds off large amounts of static before they can build into a full-strength strike. I've seen my neighbors house across the street get hit twice in the last 3 years and a transformer 60 yards up the street get blown off the pole (at which point I lost power too) , but never has it hit on my property, and never have I lost a modem or any electrical appliance as a result of lightning. Now that I've said this, the first spring thunderstorm we get will toast everything in the house, but it was nice while it lasted.
  2. I think the Rev has pretty much nailed it. There's a real good possibility you talked to the same guy in multiple support cases. I know I've talked to 'Simon' at least twice. I think his real name is Ahkkmed... you know that noise that sounds like they're hacking up a loogie? Sumthin' like that...
  3. Well whatever they did helped me too... I was at 29 KiBps a little earlier and look now! :::.. 4. Seems odd that 2 birds go down completely within a month of each other. (referring to the one that hosted a lot of Starband customers that went belly-up recently) ...and then the problems with SatMex 5 and now G3C. Hope this isn't a trend for the immediate future.
  5. Heh heh, you have to imagine the waiters script with a heavy Indian accent.
  6. If restaurants functioned like Direcway... Patron: Waiter! Waiter: Hi, my name is Ahmed, but you may call me Simon... I'll be your Support Waiter. What seems to be the problem? Patron: There's a fly in my soup! Waiter: Try again, maybe the fly won't be there this time. Patron: No, it's still there. Waiter: Maybe it is the way you're using the soup; try eating it with a fork instead. Patron: Even when I use the fork, the fly is still there. Waiter: Maybe the soup is incompatible with the bowl; what kind of bowl are you using? Patron: A SOUP bowl! Waiter: Hmmm, that should work. Maybe it's a configuration problem; how was the bowl set up? Patron: You brought it to me on a saucer; what has that to do with the fly in my soup?! Waiter: Can you remember everything you did before you noticed the fly in your soup? Patron: I sat down and ordered the Soup of the Day! Waiter: Have you considered upgrading to the latest Soup of the Day? Patron: You have more than one Soup of the Day each day?? Waiter: Yes, the Soup of the Day is changed every hour. Patron: Well, what is the Soup of the Day now? Waiter: The current Soup of the Day is tomato. Patron: Fine. Bring me the tomato soup, and the check. I'm running late now. Waiter leaves and returns with another bowl of soup and the check. Waiter: Here you are, Sir. The soup and your check. Patron: This is potato soup. Waiter: Yes, the tomato soup wasn't ready yet. Patron: Well, I'm so hungry now, I'll eat anything. Waiter leaves. Patron: Waiter! There's a gnat in my soup! The check: Soup of the Day ................................... $5.00 Upgrade to newer Soup of the Day .................. $2.50 Access to support ................................. $1.00 Copied from an old M$ support joke... the names have been changed to protect the guilty.. errr, innocent!!
  7. I'm in the same boat as lakecity10... if you have seen my test results in some of the other posts today, you'll get an idea of what I've been dealing with here. Here's a current test for about 9:45 pm. I'm not going to wait thru the big one again. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 235 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 748 KB) Download Speed is:: 29 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 4 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 35.31 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=20IOKVNUS Still pretty crappy, even now...

  9. Lance, you're psychic!! You hit the nail on the head. It actually was CM, but I understand now that he knows everything and shouldn't be questioned. That's cool. I have no questions at the moment for him to provide a worldly answer to, so I'm here enjoying the company. Thanks all for the great welcoming committee.
  10. Yeah, it's cool alright... I keep my blue-flashing POS inside my 6 ft. rack-mount cabinet where I don't have to look at it all the time, LOL! Otherwise I may be more tempted to see how resistant it is to multiple blows from a 2 lb. ball peen hammer, specially at times like this. :::.. We're blazin' now baby! Hint: I went and had a cigarette and practiced guitar for a while during the time this was running. I want my dial-up back!

Be back in a while. BTW, also running Firefox here, so I will retest first with Firefox and then with IE6 (yuck!) and see if there is a noticeable difference.
  13. LOL, thanks Rev for the heads up. I'll give you the short version of my current configuration. Windows 2000 Pro SP-4, no adware or spyware, Linksys LNE 100 TX network card, Linksys 4 port simple hub for the network, TCP Rec Win: 224360. Win Scaling: Yes, Time Stamping: No, Sel Acks: Yes, Path MTU: Yes, Black Hole Det.: No, Max Dupe Acks: 3, TTL: 64 MTU: 1460... Ran the LCCU program sometime back when I first got the sat and also did the recommended browser tweaks for Firfefox which is my default browser. Can't think of anything else at the moment. Had a real tough time getting on the site this morning although my e-mail actually works again. Couldn't bring up the new speed test site you posted earlier either. Just times out to a blank page after a while. Signal strength still isn't quite up to par today at 68. I haven't done any tweaking to the dish since install and it always hovers between 72 - 78 when the weather is clear. I run a small computer biz here in the boonies of western NM and I had a one-way grey dish system before this that actually worked pretty well once I got the heat problems fixed on my PCI sat modem. (A big gnarly heat-sink superglued to the hottest chip on the board and 2 fans) . So, when the DW-6000 showed up touting the great speeds, etc. etc. I finally took the plunge since it looked like dsl here was still quite a way off. Ironic that we got working dsl 5 weeks after I had the D-way ball and chain attached to my leg. Anyway, it worked pretty well for about the first month or so until the 4.3.0.8 firmware 'upgrade' and then everything went to crap since then. I had to reground the dish (namely the transmitter) properly since the installer never did and since we're 200 miles from the nearest installer, I decided with a little help from others and a trusty copy of the DW-6000 official installers PDF, I'd do it myself. Anyway, the dish is now properly grounded. If you have any other ideas/tweaks, I'm open to any and all suggestions. Glad to be here!

  15. LOL, thanks! That's what happens when you've had a bit too much Tequila, a large lime, a sharp knife and a *very* patient kitty.
  16. Hmm, reminds me of something that happened to me when a certain person from d-way uncensored thought it was fun to drag my comments on dish grounding procedures from there to the BBR forum so he could humiliate me in front of others and make himself look more intelligent. Needless to say, I think my donation to d-way uncensored was pretty much wasted when the mods wouldn't even reprimand him for his behavior. I then decided that was not a real good place to be. I don't post anymore at D-way uncensored but I still post speed tests to BBR although I try not to say too much otherwise. Hopefully, I can speak a little more freely here, but I'll just hang in the shadows for a while until I become more familiar with everyone. BTW, nice to hear about the new server, hope it works out well. Dave-
  17. Greets to the Rev and all. I should have joined here months ago. Seems G3C's performance has been severely impaired since it came back online yesterday evening. Signal strength is down to 60-66 compared to the usual 72-78 I had been getting. I'm wondering if the bird took a meteor hit or if the whole thing is/was an intentional disabling by the NOC to reconfigure the transponders for less performance/more bandwidth in order to cram a few thousand more customers on it? Any views or comments on this? DW-6000 CE into a 4 port Linksys hub | G3C 95 W | Win 2000 Pro SP-4 & Mandrake 9.0 stable Official signature will be active shortly...
