  1. Sorry it has taken so long to acknowledge everyone's suggestions, have been out of town. I will try and answer everyone's questions with this post.

I am not using a wireless router, just have the FM router directly connected to PC. As far as how close to other electrical devices in the room, it is about 4 1/2 feet from the PC and UPS.

I usually reset my connections at least once a day.

Thanks for the cablenut settings, will give them a try.

As a side note, I did send a message to Tech Support and got the following response regarding my performance:

Pat has the antenna's adjusted, but has noticed the change in both sides of

networks, he called technical support, and they said that they have received

many calls from other companies with the same problem, of Internet slowness

problems occuring more during the day. The guy has told him that all these

kids are getting out of school, having nothing to do, and just staying

online all day, and downloading music, videos, whatever they want.

Thus, it is causing more strain on the BSR (Base Station Radio), since it

handles each modem individually. (In a period of NANOseconds.) I thought

that was pretty cool, but the fact is, that so many people are using it at

once now, and using higher bitrates, that it is NOT cool.

He has tested this theory by cutting off half the network, and seeing if

everyone elses response times improved, and they did.

He is in the process with a plan to have more radios installed to break up

the network in more sections. (Very expensive may I add)

However, it sounds like your antenna DOES need to be adjusted by the way.

Hopefully with the antenna adjustment and some more equiptment, my speeds will come back up to where they have been.

I want to thank everyone once again for your help and KUDOS to this place!!!

  2. I have a Maxtor 250G external connected via USB. I have been using this drive for about a year as a backup storage for my backup image of my backup image (I backup my system to a 2nd hard drive and then backup the 2nd hard drive to the external USB Maxtor 250G drive, can't be too careful). Last week the Maxtor filled up completely and won't allow me access, in fact, it doesn't show up as one of my drives at all. I have tried to use Partition Magic 8.0 to lay down a partition and format the drive (system shows that the drive does not have a partition). Everytime I try to create a partition and format the drive, I get a message from Partition Magic saying that it can't create the partition and format it as drive I: (the drive letter that was used when it was added to the system the first time; even tried with diffeent drive letters, but no dice) since the system appears to have the Maxtor in use somewhere. The drive does not show up in my drive listings, however, when I look at my hardware table, it shows the Maxtor drive in the hardware table as a device on my system.

Does anyone know how I can get access to that drive and format it so it can be used (NTFS)?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice ...

  3. Thank you for your quick reply. Here are the test results from different things for you. The first is a ping test from my PC to their system. Also, I notice a variability with performance, at times it is faster and other times it is slow. As you can see from my first test results and the ones I just ran for this reply.

  4. First off, this is a great forum, I have learned a lot here, I recommend this place to everyone I know. Here is my problem. I live in a remote area that isn't serviced by cable or dsl. I am connected to the net via an FM router. Goes from my PC and transmits via FM to a main radio tower and then from there to my ISP's system and then out via a T1 line to AT&T. My connection speeds are supposed to be 512/512 (they actually have the pipe open bigger for me so I have bandwidth higher than the 512/512). I have cablenut and have flushed my cache, run SpyBot, run Ad-Aware, run BugDoctor and am using AV for anti-virus. All tests and checks are clean, nothing found. Below are my speeds. Can someone help me with a good cablenut setting that will push me up to near where I should be. Thanks in advance for all help and advice. Y'all are the greatest ...

    Thanks,

For the ones that want to test them yourself, you can go to their website at www.etwisp.net and click on the Speed Test button in the upper right hand part of the screen.

Hope y'all can help and again, thanks in advance and great work everyone.

  6. I am looking for an excellent System Backup Software. I want to be able to not only do a complete image but also do incremental as well. The software must be able to write to a USB Drive, CD, DVD or another hard drive. I want the maximum flexibility for backup and restore and full recovery. I don't what to have to reload my base XP OS that came with my system and then have to go through the whole upgrade of patches. The recovery software should have the complete system with all patches as well as all my programs and data. I want to be able to just lay the system back on my drive and be up and running at the point where the crash occurred.

I was using Norton Ghost 9.0, but two weeks ago I had a hard drive failure and when I put the original HP Recovery disk in to lay out the base system prior to playing back my full system and incremental, for some reason it overwrote part of my backup on my external drive. I took my external USB drive to a computer store that specializes in data recovery and they found that one of my two full system and incremental had been overwritten. However, the one from the week prior was there all 56 Megs and its incremental, however, the last 98 KB of data on the full system was over written. Since it wasn't intact, Norton wouldn't bring back the 56 megs. and incremental. I lost everything, tax returns, a book I was writing, etc.

Can someone point me in the right direction.

    Thanks in advance,

    Bluize

  7. I had the HP Recovery disk format my drive and lay a complete system down as it was when I bought it. Then I booted from the Norton Ghost cd and had it lay my system down as it was before I started having the problems.

  8. I'm not familiar with that ... How should I proceed? This is really bugging me. I did a complete system recovery, formatted the drive and had the HP Recovery lay a complete new system down as it was when I bought the thing. I then restored my system with the Ghost and it is staying up longer, but will eventually lock then go to the blue screen with a core dump ...

  9. I would appreciate any advice or help. First off, I have not installed any new hardware or software within the last month. Two days ago, my system just locked up with the disk access light lit. I rebooted and got the following error message: NTLDR is missing, do a Ctl+Alt+Del to restart. I did and it came back with the same error message. I am running Norton Ghost 9.0 and had a complete backup that was done at 6AM. I even tried booting in Safe Mode, but that didn't work. I did a complete recovery of my system and the problem still persisted. The system would finally come up, but after about 15 or so minutes, it would go to the blue screen and post a message with the following error message - Kernel_stack_inpage_error.

I have ran virus scans, nothing there. I have had the disk checked for errors, nothing there. I even did a chkdsk /F and it was fine. I went to the MS webpage and searched tech docs and got no help there. Even emailed MS and got their standard contact your hardware manufacturer and if problem still persists, call and pay for support.

The system runs fine for a while, then it will just seize up and I have to power off and then back on.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

    Ben

  13. I did the tweaks, disconnected the Vonage Router and connected directly from the wireless to my PC. Couple of interesting things. When I checked my network connection after removing the Vonage Router, the network connections showed the wireless connection was 10 Mbps ... Did the tracert and looked at the times ... Had one that was way out of line with the other, in excess of 300ms .... Others were less than 170ms ... Hooked everything back up (Vonage box) checked network connection and it now showed 100 Mbps!!!! ... Did the tracert and the times were much better with the Vonage box  ... Highest was 225ms but others were around the 150ms or less range ... Any ideas? :?:
