  1. Been a while since I've been here and have an issue with getting 4.0 to W3K. I know, why didn't you do it years ago? 'cause I couldn't....

    The scenario:

Current situation is NT 4.0 domain on a DNS structure that disallows replication of DNS data to a new DNS server. The new environment will have DNS under W3K. I cannot upgrade a PDC on a different server because when I do, the server gives me a BSOD and have not been able to find a fix for it. MS has many suggestions.... but no answers. My real question is, will the following scenario succeed in getting a DC online with the NT 4.0 SIDs and computer accounts intact?

Redisign: Bring up a W3K DC with AD on the new network with DNS

Bring up an NT4 pdc on the new network, previously a bdc on the old network

Set the DNS resolution on the pdc to the new dns server (static settings for the nt pdc for DNS, IP, etc.)

Set the trusts and accesses recommended by Petrie between the nt and the new AD domain

Migrate the user/computer account using ADMT

Probably I need to add more info I haven't provided, but would this work theoretically?

  2. Hope this helps.  Haven't been around TM for a bit.

I haven't used ICS in a while, but the "host" system acts like a gateway (router, sort of).  My concern is most proprietary software is very specific in the way it sends information based on the software writers impression of the networking enviroment the program is expected to work within .

  3. "The onboard NIC is not in use. The PCI card is assigned to 192.168.0.45. The device extender I need to hook up has an assigned address of .17. Would it be at all possible to make a crossover cable, plug the device extender into that unused NIC, and have the whole mess actually function. My main worry is configuration of that NIC and whether or not the rest of the network will be able to see that .17 address."

You would need to use ICS and bridge the two nics, as suggested by rushonbye.  The onboard nic would need an ip address assigned as well.  As long as the ip addresses are static and there are no conflicts, there should be no problem with use of the .17 address.  Theoretically, it may work.  However, your computer will act as a "gateway" to the extender so alot of it depends on the software that needs to access the "extender".  The extra hop to the extender would be my only concern, based upon using proprietary software.  If the software expects the extender to be on the same LAN (not needing to go through a gateway), then it may not find the extender.  It can't hurt to try, so long as any data being sent to the extender will not be lost if the connection cannot be found.

This link may help with ICS setup:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309642

  4. I followed FallowEarth's and cak46's recommendations, and nothing worked.  Essentially, my situation is the same.  I can't log onto Road Runner.  I can access Web Mail, but still get the same error message when I try to log on.  Apparently, the software understands my ID and password because that's the only combination that produces the error message.  If I put in an incorrect ID or password, the resulting error message indicates a wrong ID or password has been entered.  I'm fairly certain TWC is at fault, and they admitted they were at fault a couple weeks ago.  Apparently, nothing has been done to fix the problem.  In my opinion, the TWC takeover of the Adelphia net in San Diego's North County area has been dismal from the start, and there's been little improvement.  I never thought I'd see the day I'd wish Adelphia was running our net, but that day is here.

Me too....  Major issues with the changeover up here in Maine......  My speed is still running just about 1000 Kbps...  Will address this down the road when things settle down..............Missin' Adelphia......  Never thought I'd ever write those words.......

  5. Oh, fikester, that is the way we cleaned medical slides, using de-mineralized water , can you get commercial alcohol in the states over the counter ?

not possible in the UK, in case we drink it

I suppose you could try bourbon, too.....  One for me, one for the monitor, two for me..... :haha: :haha:

I would think isopropyl or denatured would do the same.  Wouldn't recommend it on an lcd monitor, though.  I'd stick with a mild soap and water solution on a cotton cloth.

  6. Thanks everyone.  I guess I'll juss save up some more money for the PSU....My cousin doesnt wanna return the case....Lol....Although I should call TigerDirect like cak46 says and ask if they would replace the PSU....what are the chances of that happenin?

Never dealt with TigerDirect but from what I've heard, they are pretty reasonable.  Someone else may better answer this, though.

    Good luck!

  7. So far as I can determine, Road Runner Web Mail is Adelphia's Web Mail with some Road Runner cosmetic changes.  Currently, I can't access Road Runner using http://www.rr.com/flash.  However, I can access Web Mail using http://webmail.adelphia.net/webedge/do/mail/folder/view.  However after entering my user name and password, I get the following error message:

There was a problem processing your last request. Please try again later.

I contacted chat support a couple weeks ago and was told my issue is a known problem and would soon be fixed.  Clearly, the problem remains, and a new one has been added.  That is, I can't even access the Road Runner web page currently.  Soon after TWC took over, I could access Road Runner and use Web Mail.

Here is a direct link to their web mail page.

    http://webmail.roadrunner.com/webedge

For the user id, just use your id EG:  tdawnez

    then enter your password.

Do NOT use your full name as your id EG:  [email protected]

If it doesn't work then most likely your password needs to be changed.  Mine did the same thing and whilst trying to get reconnected, i had them reset my password.  Hope this helps!

  8. Why does a motherboard have to use more than one power plug?  It pisses me off...I bought a motherboard from a fellow board member, I didnt specify what the case was like so I got the motherboard from him, when it gets to my house, it doesnt work because the power supply is missin a plug....the one not circled in the pic, which is what Im guessin  x 6-Pin AUX (Xeon) Power plug or somethin(tell me if Im wrong)...Im not blaming him so dont think I am, Its all my fault, so then I talk to my cousin who all this is for, not me, and then he says to just get a whole new case, so I picked one, asked around, got told that it would work because most new PSUs have that plug, so I order it got here today, I open it up...and what do I see....no freakin plug.....I called TigerDirect and they gave me an RMA...it sucks because this is the case my cousin wanted....the case is this one:

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1289171&sku=A406-1028

Can I get some help please...I would like to not have to send the PSU back and get a new PSU, but I, and he are both broke.....So  the help I need really is, for someone to help me pick out a case that <i>will</i> work...please...thanks..

What is the make and model of the motherboard?

Did you check with TigherDirect to see if they would replace just the power supply with one that is compatible with your motherboard?  They should be able to look up the MoBo and see which is compatible.

  9. I don't know if this technique actually works, but it seemed to with Adelphia.  Let me explain.

When I first subscribed to Adelphia's 4-Mbps service (actually 3 Mbps initially), I got very low downloading speeds (around 5-700 Kbps).  After many go arounds with Adelphia's people at two levels, I decided to reinstall Windows and a minimum of other software to determine if my computer was the problem.  My downloading speed jumped to about 2000 Kbps.  After confronting Adelphia again to prove my computer was clean of spyware etc, they still couldn't adequately explain my low speed.  I heard about the possibilty of a bad splitter, bad cables, and on and on.  Finally, I wrote a complaint to management via their chat service and stated if my problem wasn't fixed promptly I would file a complaint with the FCC.  Two days later my downloading speed went to about 4.2 Mbps where it stayed until Time Warner Cable (TWC) took over a few weeks ago.  Now, my speed is typically around 3500 to 3700 Kbps.  I'm waiting for the takeover to settle down before I do battle with TWC on the speed issue.  However, I can't access Web Mail and will probably pursue that issue soon.  My Microsoft Outlook linked to Road Runner works OK.  So, I'm not in a hurry for Web Mail.  I can get my mail online via Yahoo.  Still, the Web Mail issue is just another of the problems that occurred the moment TWC began operating the old Adelphia network in North San Diego County.  In other words, TWC sucks big time at the moment.

Are you trying to use the old Adelphia WM or the new TW web mail?

  10. hmm ive had the opposite, ive had seagate drives die, but never a maxtor. I have maxtor drive that are 10 years old and still work great. Tho any of the new Seagate drives i have are great.

Never had a Maxtor drive go to this point either.  Been running two in my 98 machine for about 6 years now.

  11. alright everybody is wrong.. the worst tech/customer support comes from our lovely friends at the wireless phone companies...

I personally would rather deal with an ISP than have to call Cingular..  They have you by the balls no matter what you say unlike ISPs where you can just leave...

You may be right!  The last time I called US Cellular, they charged me for calling their customer service line...  :tickedoff:

  12. I rather not deal with Tech Support. I've had to call my ISP alot when i was having issues with signal dropping on my cable modem. You know you've called your ISP too much when they pickup the phone and say your name and you know their name, plus their last name.

Doomsday:  That is way too much! :smile2:  Did they give you any sort of creidt on your bill for the trouble?

  13. I do not at all disagree that things can and should have been handled better.  From there we part ways 180 deg...

You accuse me of making assumptions.  It is fair to assume by your first rant about how incompetent the staff that you encountered were that you were probably not the nicest person to deal with.  It is also fair to assume since we get people like you all the time...who's first statement in the call is  "I'm a network engineer...blah blah blah and you don't know what you're talking about" that you clearly have not been treating your customer service professionals with the respect they deserve.  You've done it here with me...you don't know me from Adam but you sure did grab the moment to come out swingin didn't ya.  I sir have been an IT professional for 22 years 11 months and about 8 days (took me a bit to compute that..honestly I don't keep count normally), long before you were probably even a concept so please...do not lecture me about responsibilty of the company.  I have created and managed more technical support departments than you can count on all your digits combined.  The facts are you do not have even a glimmer of a concept of what it takes to convert a cable based network of this size...in your wildest of dreams you will never work on such a network most likely.  So please....the next time you decide to come out swinging...make sure there is something there to swing at.  Nobody was attacking you.  There have been many complaints lately and some justifiable...some not.

There is no doubt that communication probably should have been better....

You seem to forget all of the people that managed your cable company before are no doubt the ones who are still managing your cable company now.  They just don't come down one day and clean house and start over...it's impossible to do in a cable company environment. No matter how hard TW tries to prepare them...if they are unreceptive or refuse get with the big picture things like this can happen....Don't just assume that TW is to blame for it....my hunch is the communication problems with your company existed long before TW took control of them and now everyone is paying the price.

All of this is moot because neither YOU or I work for your company and neither one of us make the decisions there....and thats probably a good thing for them.... because if things really are as bad as you claim to be...if I were there heads would be rolling right about now...

I did not come out swinging, but if you wish, I will.  Just let me know......

I never said the people I spoke with were incompetent.  Quote:  "It is fair to assume by your first rant about how incompetent the staff that you encountered were that you were probably not the nicest person to deal with."  And to use your own words, "You don't know me from Adam"  They, contrary to your assumption, were very helpful.  The ineptness was pointed to the people who decided to provide poor customer service, whoever they are.

The only assumption that could be gleaned about you from my response is that you may work for TW.  You may or may not work for TW, but at least my assumption was partially correct....

But in your response, like before, the assumptions abound.  All I can say is WOW!

Quote:  "It is also fair to assume since we get people like you all the time...who's first statement in the call is  "I'm a network engineer...blah blah blah and you don't know what you're talking about" that you clearly have not been treating your customer service professionals with the respect they deserve".... "I sir have been an IT professional for 22 years 11 months and about 8 days (took me a bit to compute that..honestly I don't keep count normally), long before you were probably even a concept so please...do not lecture me about responsibilty of the company.  I have created and managed more technical support departments than you can count on all your digits combined.  The facts are you do not have even a glimmer of a concept of what it takes to convert a cable based network of this size...in your wildest of dreams you will never work on such a network most likely."

You can directly flame me all you wish, but your argument has no standing on the issue of providing poor customer service, such as TW did concerning this implementation.  The way you try to diminish the real issue by attacking me in your latest response astounds me, since you have been in this business for 22+ years.

I'm sorry, but I do not like to be "set straight" by anyone who uses personal attacks such as that you have just written. And by the way, I would not want to work on such a network, since I would just be one of the faceless millions.

  14. I'm having problems with downloading from the internet. Everytime I try downloading a file, it works for a while, and stops in the middle and my whole internet just stops working. The lights on the modem are all still online though =S anyone know what the problem is?

Try the largest download speed test here and see if you have the same problem getting the test file from testmy then report results.  Also, clear your temporary internet files and cookies (ignore this if someone already  suggested this...)
