Sorry, are you accepting any kind of donations ?
MFP replied to MidAde's topic in Ideas to make testmy.net better?
Henry Ford was a racist Nazi supporter and believed in eugenics. the Polio vaccine kept me from getting polio as a child, the COVID vaccine kept me from getting COVID as an adult. speed.measurementlab.net, speed.clouldflare.com and waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat are all very good speed test sites. -
Let me know when Charter starts laying fiber in rural America. Charter will continue to milk the coaxial cow until it is dry. AT&T came right out and said that their profits are better spent giving dividends than investing in rural America. Of course they will all say that they are, to get some of the corporate welfare flowing from DC. But those promises are already 25 years old. See the 400 billion dollar broadband scandal book.

Mudman, Thanks for the basic tips but I have been at this for three years and am determined to force Spectrum to give me what I am paying for and/or reduce my excessive pricing. I am testing very clean with only one machine connected at a time. Three years ago I got an admission that they couldn't do 400 via a price cut. Now I am trying to get the 500 they promise, by upgrading to 1000. But if I drop back to 500 I will still pay the same. Spectrum won't do commercial accounts at residential addresses and I don't want to pay that vig anyway. Btw, if you backup in this thread you will find a funny song I wrote and recorded about hops.

No time as of yet to install the new router, however more testing of Linux reveals a dramatic improvement in downloads

I just today nstalled Linux Mint 21.2 Victoria Cinnamon Edition on a brand new system. One time linear test results continue to be low and inconsistent. I don't have time to do long term testing right now. I keep trying because I am looking for a good test methodology. I am hopelessly looking to prove to myself that I actually have the 1000Mbps that I am paying Spectrum for. Saying I should be happy with 400 doesn't help me. Blaming my, now 11, computers does not move that forward. Am installing a new Netgear RAXE500 2.5Gbps router to match my 2.5Gbps Hitron modem, and a 2.5Gbps TPLink switch with Cat 8 cables tomorrow and will see what that does. Note the 638Mbps multithread test as my final test. I don't want these posts to be adversarial, so please stop trying to bait me. Just help me discover why I am getting low and inconsistent test results, if you want. If not then don't.

"Your wife probably clicked something and got the device infected, being an analog girl and all. " Sorry again, but this is why she doesn't have an Admin account. Running out of excuses yet? The Mod, who I was not talking to said, "Seems like you're always ready to attack me. " Simply pointing out that this system testing is inconsistent across browsers is not an _attack_. This is more what an attack would look like: It makes me wonder that if everyone has to adapt their computers and software to get consistent test results on his site, then what the hell good is it? The old saying is that “it’s always the clubs and never the golfer”. Maybe what you should do is put a System Requirements section at the top of your website listing how all the planets need to be aligned for your system to give accurate and repeatable test results: Make and Model of device(s) OS version(s) Browser version(s) Application software allowed, AV, firewall, etc. Any memory requirements, etc.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I was using the wife's Win10 Surface tablet, to introduce a new player into the testing, hence the use of the evil Edge. She only streams Netflix and Prime with it, and then only occasionally as she is a bit of an analog girl. <g>. No extensions of any kind on either browser. This is simply the Gecko engine versus the Chromium engine. I would hope that your beta will factor this type of problem out.

Thoughts on my different results from same machine with different browsers, in my previous posts?

So here we have tests from 7/10 my router and my modem both showing the same approximate results. 40ish from the router and the modem with a linear test. 300ish from the router and the modem with the multithreaded test to testmy.net from my Intel NUC.

Btw, what is the https://testmy.net/hoststats/amazoncom site that I tested to above?

From the modem directly March 8 and 9, 2023 using two different computers. One of the problems here is that I can't shut my network down for ten days to really test this idea. This was what was behind me getting Spectrum to give me a SanKnows box, but typically they corrupted this idea and can't really use it to do my own testing. NOTE: PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE TESTS ARE A ONETIME SNAPSHOT OF DATA AND DO NOT NECESSARILY EXPLAIN THE RANDOM LOW BANDWIDTH MESSAGES I GET FROM GOOGLE (YOUTUBE), AMAZON (PRIME VIDEO) OR NETFLIX. I have a 400 page, 100k word, book of this three year saga, if you care to read it for all the gory details. I was testing earlier today (ident 03) with the Surface4 and Edge and was getting around 30 linear. I was also getting poor results with speedtest.exe. So I fired up Firebox and my linear tests to Dallas went from 30 to 230. (ident 04) No reboot, no changes, no nothing. Just a different browser. How do you explain this? There are still way too many variables here! I have had about six different modems here, multiples of Ubee, Technicolor, another I don't remember the name and the Hitron EN2251 with 2.5G Ethernet port which I have now. I don't recall testing from the modem to TMN but too many, many, places. Enough to convince even Spectrum that my router was fine. It is a real hassle to shut down my network connections and try to get these machines over to the modem. So I don't do it unless I am really sure that I need to . I will try to dig up my modem testing data, and will post it here later. Meanwhile if you could answer my burning question.

"Your speed improved when you booted the fresh win11 install, right? I think something you have installed or some setting is messing things up. " I can get 200 from a computer that just got 40 as well. I can get 200 or 90 and then 40 an hour later. A one time snapshot doesn't prove anything. For you be right about this, this _setting_ would have to be present in different OS's, different form factors, and different software loads across all ten of my computers. I am sorry but that is just not believable or logical in any way. The only common dominator is the router (already proven good) or Spectrum.
-
"Why would you trust the other test's results ever after they've shown it working correctly when it obviously isn't? " To prove to you and others that it is not my computers or router.
-
Right, my only point was that it cannot be the Samsung tablet computer if it can do this on speedtest. No comment on accuracy. I am seeing the same thing right now with the Dallas server and a MS Surface tablet that has also done 940 Mbps. How can this not be a Spectrum problem?
-
Problem with the CO test sever or Spectrum? ?t=u&d=07-07-2023&l=25&z=26&q=MFP's Speed Test Results It's not the computer (Samsung tablet) as it will do fine to the Spectrum speedtest beauty sites.

"You may want to say monopoly. But it comes down to the infrastructure. Cable laid the infrastructure with superior technology far earlier than telco companies. Coaxial cable even in it's early stages has always been amazing. It was immediately ready for high speed internet before it was even a thing. The architecture of cable systems beat twisted pair, they laid more infrastructure easier. They won for good reason. " They simply leveraged existed TV cable lines and exclusive local government contracts. They got bills passed to ban competition from local governments, they lie about coverage areas and service provided to discourage competition. They are no less evil than the telecom companies. AT$T publicly said that their money, ill-gotten gains, is better spent on shareholder dividends than investment in fiber for rural broadband.

I have never been unappreciative of your efforts or your service. If I come off that way, it is only out frustration from this years long battle with Spectrum and my unrealistic expectations of TMN as my last best hope. So thank you for what you do. Am still willing to test your beta.

"Bandwidth & server specs are absolutely not in play here. TMN is on a 10 gig backbone." Says you. The website says there is a 2000Gbps backbone. So the test servers all have multiple 1Gbps nic's? Or they have 10Gbps nic's? Each server has multiple 1Gbps connections? Or a 10Gbp connection? The TestMy network has a total capacity of over 2000Gbps and our servers have multiple gigabit uplinks into that network. TestMy is always overstocked with bandwidth and can meet the needs of even the most demanding connections. Our servers are also configured and tested to maintain full quality of service for thousands of miles. We have multi-homed connectivity and bandwidth from over 25 independent Tier 1 carriers including Comcast, Cox, Time Warner, Charter, Qwest, Google, Level 3, Internap, NTT America, Equinix & Telefónica to name a few. Per the example, if the test site my buddy used gives the same result as TMN, how can it be hot garbage? Not logical. I know that you are invested and defensive, but I am just trying to cut through all the crap in this business and pay for only what I get. It was the Admin who bragged he could solve my problems if I only ran these tests, and then these, and then these, and then in the end ust be happy with that you have. I never projected expertise just long experience, but I was expecting to benefit from the expertise that was projected here. Suggesting I change ISP's is just disingenuous.

"If you're getting 250 Mbps on the Linear test, you're doing pretty good. Especially in a rural area. " So 250 linear and 500 MT I should consider good? I am paying $100 a month for 1000, and I should be happy? My buddy in Florida says: "https://internetspeedtestx.com/ seems to accurately show me my advertised speeds. 250Mbps Hotwire fiber." I get 80Mbps on that site to a test server in VA. He also sees 250 to testmy.net, Miami and CO. "If you just booted that Windows 11 fresh install on that machine and now it's pulling 250 Mbps instead of 40 Mbps. There you go... something is holding that machine back, software wise. " You are forgetting that these tests are simply short term snapshots. On my ten day test, my low was 40, Median 436 an Max 516. You are also forgetting that this issue is across 6-10 computers. Again, it is not a router or computer issue and I was hoping you could help me find it. You originally came off to me as a guy who knew a lot and has been doing this a long time. There is a lot of big talk, hubris, and bragging by the author of this website. All I have discovered with your site is what is leading me to question the bandwidth and rigor at your test servers. But in the end, at a loss for an explanation, you are saying that I should be happy for what I have. Disappointed.

By looking again at the spreadsheet data, I can see that this is generally but not exclusively true. However I am not trying to tune my PC's to do well on these tests. I have already eliminated some speed deterrents like Zone Alarm AV and Firewall, and fine tuned my DNS and eliminated hosts files. I am trying to test definitively, in a world full of bad tests, and also understand why I cannot get what I am paying for geographically outside of SPECTRUMNET. Rather than going through the whole Linux ordeal above, I have another hard disk with a clean Win11 install on it. I don't use it because Win11 is functionally unusable to anyone who knows how to use a computer. Anyway I will swap it out, suffer through it and will test with that. Ok, so windows 11 with Edge First three tests are with MT OFF Next three tests are with MT ON OS, browser, don't seem to matter much. Shit results. ?t=u&d=07-05-2023&l=25&z=20&q=MFP's Speed Test Results Well, that was an ordeal I won't wish on anyone.
-
I will remind you that my OP was showing sub 500Mbps across ten days testing every hour testing with MT ON. Now based on your advice I see a big difference between MT and no MT. This occurs on all six tested computers. It really doesn't matter what the highest speed is, as they are all substandard. And based on prior testing this goes for my other four computers as well. So lets stop talking about my computers and get on to why the MT and no MT performance is so different. Double speed with it ON. See the attached spreadsheet for details. You are starting to sound like Spectrum here blaming the router and the computers. They blamed my router and also used it to pronounce my connection good. They blamed my computers except when I could occasionally get a good speedtest.net score to their favorite location. I have been building and using computers since 1987. I have a newish known good router and ten computers that cannot be all bad. I have desktops, laptops, SFF, NUC and tablets. In terms of software, MS antivirus and firewall, mix of Brave and Firefox browsers, mix of Win7 and Win10, all with 1Gbps Ethernet connected with Cat 6/7 cables. There is nothing special about the software loads, MS Office, Norton Ghost for backups, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe CS6, FTP software and Web authoring software for maintaining my website. I use Word for writing my books and a browser for research. That is about it. I monitor bandwidth use with GlassWire, and have shut off all telemetry of any kind. 07-04-2023-edited-testmy.net-stats.xlsx
