Directly wired to the modem w/ 2 diff. computers - the best I get is 4.7Mbps - the same I got when it was advertised at 5Mbps.

cableguy ... Just because everybody does it (or so you say) doesn't make ir right. Unlike you, I don't have a "love"/"hate" relationship with my ISP. I just want then to give me some of the supposed 40% upgrade that they loudly touted. That's it plain and simple. Or charge me 40% less for what I already have. Unfortunately, they own the cable that comes into my house ... so I am a "captive customer" and don't know of a better alternative at this time. If there was one I'd take it.And the only movie quote that I can think of to respond is "There has to be more to life than just being really, really, really, ridiculously good-looking". Thanks Gotta - It's too bad Birighthouse/Earthlink isn't or can't supply what they say they do; but at least I know I'm not the only one. And I've come to the conclusion that "cableguy" ia AKA "brighthouseguy" and gets defensive when the truth is pointed out about their connection speeds. So he says things like it's still "great performance", but that doesn't cover up the fact that - at best - it's misleading advertising. A bigger farce is the brighthouse speed test versus any reputible one on the net. Want faster speeds - take their test!

Funny CableGuy, that's exactly what the BrightHouseGuy said. So I'll take your advice - I now signed up with Dr. Phil for 6 months of attitude adjustment. He guarantees that for every seminar (paid) I attend, I'll see 100kps improvement in my internet speed. In addition, he'll throw in a free back alignment. PM me if anyone wants the number. RTB - Sorry 2 GB of ram on the AMD 64 3200. Yes it should max out speed. BrightHouseGuy and/or CableGuy ...I guess you'll tell me next it must be the fact that I don't have a water softener in the house.Dam that hard water.Can never get squeaky clean hair and now this - poor connection speeds!!!

They wanted me to check my hardware too and wanted me to get a PC tech out to look at it. Is that the typical "smoke-and-mirror" stuff they do when they aren't supplying what they say?

CableGuy - Didn't want this to crossover into two posts, but felt it was important that if someone looks up Earthlink here they find out they are not supplying what they say - period. And it's not close. I've posted my config's in the What's Wrong thread (www.testmy.net/forum/t-13033). But that is totally irrelevant in this issue - I'm not squeezing out an extra 1kps. I want some of that 40% increase they loudly advertise. And as I said they CYA'd themselves by saying "up to 7Mbps", but they can say anything is "up to whatever the hell they want to" then ... as long as they supply something.

Well this isn't an issue of squeezing out an extra 1-2Kbps - it's off by 30% of advertised speed. Yes I concede 5Mbps is "up to 7Mbps", but it's also "up to 15Mbps" so I can guess they can advertise "up to whatever the hell they want to" as long as they supply something. Now as far as computer hardware - I ran a 486 w/ 512k mem w/ XP w/ an old ethernet card and a new AMD 64 3200 w/ 2 MB mem w/ XP w/ built in net card. I ran each directly into the modem - and guess what - both gave me 4.7Mbps max. I seriously doubt my hardware is part of this issue.Maybe if I wanted to go from 6.00Mbps to 6.125Mbps it would be, but not in this case. Further, the tech who came to my house stated that the best he could get at the box on the street was 5.9Mbps - and I doubt that. There has been no improvement since the "alleged upgrade" - maybe even a degrade.

Really got pissed at BrightHouse "Senior" techs who started "song & dance" about how much better it was than a 512k phone modem and that slow speed must be due to my computer equipment and that I should call a computer tech. He then told me 5.9Mbs is only .1 away from 6Mbps and that's in range with7Mbps. In my book 5.9 is closer to 5 than itis to 7!

It's not DSL - It's been cable for years and still is cable.Round black thing used with "cable" modem. They are not supplying advertised speeds.

I think you're being kind. I've talked to their techs and they do "song and dance" saying they are NOW supplying "UP TO" 7Mbps. They even tried to blame slow speeds on my computer equipment.

Earthlink / Brighthouse says they went to 7/512 from 5/386, but they didn't - at least not in my area. I measured NO DIFFERENCE from 5/386. Called techs & had techs out to house. Was told everything was A-OK - except no speed change. Tech told me best he could get - at box on the street - was 5.99 Mbps. So if you're in Central Florida and think you can practically get over 6Mbps, I wouldn't get you hopes up. I guess 5Mbps is "UP TO 7Mbps"!

I found out what's wrong - Brighthouse/Earthlink is not supplying 7Mbps/512 as advertised. The BEST the tech, who came to my house, could get at the box on the stree was 5.9 Mbps (I didn't see this - he told me that). He confirmed there were no issues with cable or modem - yet the best I can get is 4.7 Mbps. False advertising if you ask me. But they do say "up to 7Mbps' to get out of it. Really they can't keep up with competiotrs.

Well that didn't help, but with a computer directly connected to modem, I only got 4.7Mbps. Spoke with brighthouse and their sending tech to check cable coming to house & in house.
