  1. i apologize for not using modify.  a judgement call: it would not make sense to move anything until a technician arrives on the scene.  there is a lot of sky out there and the window the satelite you are pointing at is about one half a degree tall and less than one half a degree wide.  to put that in perspective, i don't have a calculator, but the formula is a simple one: one foot square=x times tan 0.5 degree,  x is the approximate distance you are from the window, and that's a mighty big number, you probably could not see it.  and you know you can't see the satelite.  my guess is that for every one foot the satelite dish focus moves at fifteen hundred feet angular, you've lost the lock on the satelite, presuming you had the lock on the satelite. call a technician.  on the other side of the wall is where the judgement call exists.  you couldn't do it with a flashlight, don't try it with satelite. :tickedoff:  :idiot2:

Edit by RTB: Dude, caps OFF. I won't warn you again, the next time's it'll be a temporary ban.

  2. I'll never forget being called to a viewers house and finding poor reception about four and a half miles from the tower.  It looked great on the portable television analyzer.  The company engineer and I scratched our heads over it.  Something out of the blue, struck me and I asked, "What's on the other side of the wall?"  What's on the other side of your wall.  Do you have one of these thinqs: a humidifier, attic fan, whole house fan, or anything electrical on the other side of the barrier (roof included).  What about close by on the roof is there an attic fan or humidifier in the beam or just plain nearby.  The culprit on my occassion, a plastic band digital watch under the television. Certainly the electronic equipment should be given some leeway,  Some space.  The cable will not pick up much noise; however, it is possible.  Give a visual inspection to make sure along the entire legnth of the cables they have "breathing room" of about two and one half inches on any direction from electrically inductive equipment. :2funny:

  3. Is your WildBlue dish grounded???  Attached to a house of roof there should be a green wire leading to a grounding point or the one will get almost unexpected results.  There is a ground screw on the back edge of the modulator on the satellite dish.  Not connected to a sewer stand pipe or chimney.. A water pipe or electrical meter grounding rod.  Probably not connected to a television antenna, unless there is a superior separate ground wire.  The WildBlue is connected not to the pole, but the ground wire itself.  Consider this: what are your height constraints, are ther any radio/television, cell phone, utility towers in the area. Is the dish near the powerline ganghead.  Grounding and neutral planes are what stabilize the signal by actully giving good bounce to reflect off of into the transducer.

  4. Has anyone tried the turning a meter lead around the coax?  You can tell it's handshaking, but shouldn't be like Bill and Teds Wild Adventure of meter readings!  Rock Solid means if sometrhing varies within reason, the action is transmitted to another reasonable facet of a system. And, generally lessening in hazardous nature to the system.  Also at the same time examine current generated and voltage by the rule of hand tech trick.

  5. Omega says that one's provider may have an internal cable test within their ISP service, rather than the cable wrapped with a multimeter lead wire and the multimeter lead connected back into the meter at the free post female socket.  Check with your ISP.

!Don't go over and cut an installer installed cable, EVER!

  6. So True....The point is well taken.  A10/100/1000 ethernet circuit is most proficient at it's all encompassing rating.  One would not have a new car on both end of a suspension footbridge.  One for self and one for sig. other, and yet expect to drive across because his or her car is new.  A lot of them are color coded, but the important thing is to get the cable that is needed.

  7. Visible inspection gives wonders with coax.  Look into each connector. See the white ring?  The white ring must have no chaff, or anything (dirt, water, etc.), NOT ONE strand at the white ring other than the copper strand sticking out.  As you push the connector into the panel connector, you should feel the give AND the friction.  Work on one cable and connector pair at a time. Something resting on a coax or a crimp or pinch can ruin coax at that point.  Sometimes the copper wire will break, take a pair of needle nose pliers after disconnedting both ends other the cable and each copper wire a little tug.  If it does not budge it is probably not that.  Don't work on live cables, or you may be reimbursing your provider, or buying new equipment.

If your system is paired with telphone service, look up into the sockets of the telphone connectors, are any of the wire contacts shorter than the others, crossed, of just plain missing?  Typically only two are needed, but those two must be just so.

If you have twisting coax connectors you need to get them professionally replaced.

Something that can sometimes be done is to take a multimeter with frequency measurement capability, and go to  center of the run.  Set the meter up for  frequency and wrap one of the leads around the cable a few times in a spiral, take the probe end and complete the circuit to the meter (only use one lead; both sockets on the meter).  Is the frequency correct?  Is it varying? Typically if the frequency on the dial is not rock solid unvarying you have a cable fault.  A bad cable of connector  This ones an exception, don't disconnect anything, don't turn the devices off, and don't break the coax circuit in any way

Anything else, you'll have to call a technician.

    !Good luck!

  8. The color cable one needs in high speed internet these days is BLUE.  Blue ethernet cable is the usual standard for 1000 megahz cable.  Twenty dollars should buy a BLUE replacement cable with no difficulty for most individuals.  How could you tell if you have a bad ethernet cable without test equipment and a technician??  Take the cable at the computer rear panel and insert that end into the satelite transceiver. Take the transceiver end and place into rear panel.  How has the situation changed, because of the swap?  Was download slow and now upload is slightly slower, was upload slow and download is drastically slower.  The internet does something else now.  For any change, excluding no change, you have a bad cable.  New and bad cables surface 24/7, even if the installer installed them.  If they don't have a blue cable a red one may(?) suffice.  The lowest option is the overgrown looking cable that looks similar to the cable leading from the telephone to the wall.

Unscrupulous computer techs do exist.  They may sell on rare occasion, used equipment as new.  Your ethernet card should be rated 10/100 MHz or 10/100/1000 MHz...seen 1000 MHz spoken of before?  A cable should match the highest rated capabilities of what it is connected to.  And also, in the case of poor or older product, the card could be rated lower.  !Beware cannibalized parts!  Twenty dollars should get you a brand new top notch ethernet card.  Should you think that the problem may be this issue.  You can find out about your ethernet card in network connections and properties in the control panel.

Now that you are back there at the rear panel, is your card in the slot well enough to transfer good signal?

If you have a chipset ethernet you can use troubleshoot in systems in the control panel to determine if you chipset is working properly.

And lastly, just as on you new telephones the little wires that make the connection inside the sockets the ethernet cables go into can become bent or a myriad of other problems with them.  Get your reading glasses, a flashlight and inspect them.  You need to be careful straightening them, they are not difficult to break.

Try checking that before going berserk over lack of speed.

  9. :knuppel2: of recent there have been many complaints about the provider i use. i finally checked and found about ten individuals below 100kbs.  something is obviously wrong... the provider has too many individuals going much faster than that and the allowed minimum is 350 kbs. so i thought, up what i could on what would cause such poor response.  if one is not within between 63.8 and 100 per cent of sat. bandwidth, they fall off the curve, sort of like beta/gamma on one's television.  possibly, these individuals have trees, or possibly a technical issue.  in the omicron of network they are anchors; useful, better hauled up to level or left with the fishies.  i charge anyone who can to think up further resolves against their problems.  here are my suggetions:

    1. their ethernet is arranged in this fashion, a crossover ethernet hub attached to a certain type of telephone modem.  fifteen dollars a brand new ethernet/lan card vs. bitching up the skies... no excuse.

2.their motherboard clock jumper is set at 133, 100 mhz, and their memory is 66 yet still works, or in bios (on mine in "misc.") with the clock the bios is epromed at 66mhz, or

the clock jumper is set at 66 mhz; which, is probably the correct.  in the bios it is possible to set clock of supporting ic's higher than system processor's clock.  so, bios may be selected to 66 mhz, and since many 133 sdram will not function at 66, the slowpokes could benefit greatly by compromising at 100 only in the chipset settings within the bios...excused

3.they need to buy  and run cablenut, and windows live one care, (only my opinion)...time alloted

4.they are not even attempting to resolve their issues technically, believe satelite is a "convertiguous contra" (anyone remember that phrase from early nasa) and are supportive of an ulterior agenda.

5 they are mean, and improperly decided to unload into the skies their disappointment in their computer operations expertise.

the question omicrons to me, "?why make it hard to read?"  !just continue to say, "!beats me!  it mainly has to do with not wanting convertiguous contras and my college experiences.  ?enough said?

i hope tommorow the incites go; in favor of insights!
