  1. Not to get into all the detail, but opteron processors indeed are different than the rest....not only opteron processors, but server processors overall... - if there was no overall difference/benefit, the price difference would not be so great

The opteron chips are often based on the same cores as the Athlon 64 counterparts (venice, For example) but are typically codenamed differently and/or binned much higher. The binning means that you could get a very similar core in a Opteron 144 and an FX-55 (as was the case for quite some time, and why I'm running a 144 @ FX-55 speeds). The Opteron 144 was much less expensive compared to the FX-55 at the time. The current lineup of opterons vs A64 is pretty good, the Opterons will usually provide better stability/overclockability and and take more extreme conditions (heat).

    Just a tidbit.

  3. a few people are just uploading a large file most likely

over a series of three weeks? They've assured me it's not a traffic issue... I would think they'd be the first to push me twards fibre (the next option for speed).

we're talking about seriously spurrattic speeds on the download.. my upload is fine..  but I'll get 80kB/s for two hours and then suddenly the distro i'm downloading will go to 2900kB/s... it's like suddenly someone twisted something tighter... then an hour later... back to square one.

  4. Just a question Christopher, aren't you one of the ones that said you were unthrottled on caps? Maybe not. If so maybe someone new is on the block using.  :smile2:

as my modem config indicates my d/l is uncapped. my upload is 1.5mbps... you have to pay quite a bit extra to get uncapped d/l so I don't think it's just someone else grabbing all the bandwidth on the node... could be, anyway, they're "looking into it"

  5. i wont wast my time with raid, it doesn't give me any benefit. The 750GB hard drives put me out of my price range for now so im going to go with a 500GB and i can still add 2 more drives down the road. My whole site is coded in PHP but i havent been following the talks with Microsoft and zend. ill be running Debian for my OS. I just wish i could get a little bit more bandwidth 3TB is a little low but i guess for 99 bucks a month its not bad,

    Doesn't give you any bennifits?

well, I don't understand  your situation then.

    I see it as:

Raid 0: I get approx 35% faster disk access/throughput... <---PERFORMANCE! (often less, but measurable always...!)

RAID 1: I get a bulletproof backup if i have catastrophic drive failure... (you get alerted by the raid array, send a disc and they replace it.... the array rebuilds and you're a happy camper... sweet!)

I'd do two 500's or two 250's if that's closer to your budget... the 750's are overpriced, I agree, it was a poor suggestion.  that's pretty good $/TB btw... :-) I'd have to pay $200+ for 3tb/month...

  6. In the past my ISP (midco.net) has been pretty good, especially after i begun subscribing to their business line. 20-25Mbps was a normal thing since I'm one of not very many on my Node. Lately service has gone down hill- bad. It started with erratic download speeds (one moment i'm getting 2-3 MB/s the next I'm getting 2-3Mbps). SO I called them up, and they asked me to do some tests online, and then they said they'd send someone over... great.  So they sent someone, they replaced my crappy Ambit modem with another crappy  Ambit modem of the same specs and told me that was the problem. No gas, and it was getting worse. I drop VOIP calls all the time, and my $200/month connection can download around 80kB/s for most of the day. Bad deal, unhappy Chris. I call again, they say my upload power levels are fluctuating and having collisons, and to check if my port is on full duplex or half or auto... I tell them it's on Full, they ask me to put it on half, I ask why, and she says "Just cause" (uhm, okay?) I do it... now I have issues keeping a VPN open from another location... great. I put it back and VPN's work again.. (one more problem I fixed, they sucked it up on) Call back, same issue... we'll send someone out to look at it. They get here, replace my ambit cable modem with a crappier ambit cablemodem / builtin router... now I'm in 3Mbps HELL. I can't get over the 3-5mpbs mark... (I should mention my upload is 1.5Mbps and is perfectly stable)... anyway... I am beyond the point of peeved, and don't know what to do next, therefore this rant came into existance...

  8. also (to add to the Rar crazyness) if they are .01 .02 etc files and one .rar file, it's just a multipart RAR and you can unzip all of them into one file by right clicking the .rar and selecting extract.. it'll go looking for those other files to recreate the whole original file.. (probably a movie etc)

  9. sounds like you've got it covered.. you don't need to worry about heat if you're going in a data center.. as long as you've done your part to make the cooling good enough, the ambient temp will be nice and stable and coool... :-) Sounds like an opportune moment for a raid 5 array... with only 1u of space though you'll probably be limited to a raid 0/1 setup... grab two 750gigers and slap them in raid 1... :-)    Do you use PHP as well? If so , are you following microsofts talks with Zend??! Crazy. I assume you'll be running a flavor of 'nux though anyway... Good luck let us know what you decide on!

  10. My server has dual 2.8ghz HT prescotts in a 1u chassis.... idle at 22 degrees...   (it's in a supermicro case/chassis, btw)

it looks good to me.. you won't need thee SCSI access times, ever. if you're just doing web stuff stick with SATA. (Esp considering this is a bit of a budget server)

Ram wise i had 512 for the longest time, and just upgraded to 2gb, I like the swap when the sites have lots of traffic, but i haven't used all available physical memory to date.  (But MySql does take a bit of ram, if you're going to use it)  case and point ---> 1gb should be fine for now...

what do you plan on doing with it?

    my server runs:

    AD/is a domain controller

    Exchange

    Websites (several) including

    MySQL databases

    file server

    DNS (Obviously)

    DHCP

so it does everything on my network except be a router.... :-)

    ?

  13. Well, you should typically get somewhere near your advertised speed, (I'd take between 6-8 if I were you) but that is downright bad... I would suggest posting in "Make it faster" you probably wont' (and haven't) gotten any posts on this section of the board... if you want to tell me more about your ISP and equipment I can try to give you a hand... What type of ISP is it? (WiFi, DSL, etc)  and what equipment do you use? A router? etc...

    Chris

  14. Let me help with some wifi  concerns as well--

I has wifi all 7 months I lived in Wisconsin, Mia.net I believe. My Wifi antenna was line of sight as well. Problem was I couldnt' get line of sight off the top of the house, so i put in a 50 ft TV tower, and stuck the antenna at the top. After I installed it and aimed it properly (2.5 mile link w/22db gain ant) I was seeing RSSI of 88 and signal of 98. I never had an issue, even in high winds and heavy snow... the tower would bend and flex and sway, but the internet remained fine. I loved it, that was only a 256/256 package that bursted to 1mbps but it worked great the whole time..

Bottom line, if the company is dedicated to making it work and you have a workable situation wifi is great..

that being said, you mentioned it was "Cell type"  Are you sure it's wifi and not something like Monet broadband was? 1x / EVDO broadband is a whole different ball game.. check for sure, and get back to us... overall, (either way, actually) I'd go for DSL if it is available. I've never had it, but it seems to be the cheaper, reliable (non outdoor conditions based) way to go...

    Chris

  15. Even uncapped, you still can't get speeds above 38Mbps or so...

No, you can't.. but you can get close depending on your equipment and your ISP's . I am not regulated down but hardly ever achieve over 25mpbs.

I have similar service as him, on the SAME ISP. The residental is on a lower priority tear @ Midco than my business, and depending on node traffic etc he won't get quite as good of speeds as I will.. The unthrottled speeds down on the midco max package equals somewhere between 12 and 15 if the traffic is right...

my line is in a rather.. um, scarry part of town, where not many have cable internet..  = me being 1 of 2 people on my node.  I should be able to get a theoretical maximum on DOCSIS 2.0  if all my equipment and theirs were upt to the task, which it's not, I could never suport 40Mbps down through my  network yet.

So, truthfully, he is not capped on his download speed, but neither are 6-7 other people on his node... midco just lets them fight it out for bandwidth.
