brock01 Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 Alright, i have some questions about my setup, and what would be best for me i have 4 hhds 3 120GB's 1 8GB i have windows xp installed on one of the 120GB's should i partiton that drive or what, on the hd with windows xp i have 103GB free space and you would not believe my system is running off a 250watt psu, factory dell psu, dvd burner, dvd drive, geforce 6600, and other stuff what would i get the best performance out of my comp and should i partition that drive for more space, which i could use
resopalrabotnick Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 first of all, the 250 watt psu will be toast sooner or later. you can run more than the rating of the psu for a while, but then it goes poof. as for the drives, wether you partition or not depends solely on how you like your stuff arranged. (of course creating a 500 meg boot partition is nonsense, i'm thinking that if you partition you maybe split the drives.)
amc11890 Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 wow all that runnin on a 250 watt psu

Swimmer Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 Yeah you need to upgrade you psu soon... As far as your question.. it is personal prefference.. I partition my drives so that if the windows drive goes crazy then i am not going to loose all of my data..
brock01 Posted January 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 would i have better performace all around my comp if i did upgrade the psu, like more fps in games, and faster all around speed
Swimmer Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 Haha.. no.. but you could save your computer if the psu shorts..
brock01 Posted January 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 ah i was hoping it would do something good for it, not just make it work what is a good program to partion a drive, any other good ones beside Partition Magic
dlewis23 Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 how do you have this setup, is each hardrive on its on cable, or is it like on IDE1 2 120gb and on IDE2 1 120gb and 1 8gb?
Swimmer Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 My guess.. IDE1 = 120gb 120gb IDE2= 8 gb and cd-rom

brock01 Posted January 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 if i do partition one of my 120gb drives (the one with windows xp installed on it) would if slow it down at all, cause the others dont slow it down when i put stuff on it obvivousy, does it act like its stuff on it or what, thanks
Swimmer Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 All the partition is going to do is create a new virtual disk.. There shouldn't be any performance issues is you partition.. As long as you are not trying to write and read at the same time on the same disk..
FGOKURULES Posted January 15, 2006 CID Share Posted January 15, 2006 Why don't you mirror all the drives and make 1 sick ass 368GB drive and partition what you need?
Swimmer Posted January 15, 2006 CID Share Posted January 15, 2006 If you were to mirror the drives you would get only the smallest drives capacity times the number of drives. So that would be a waste. Also I dont think you can mirror SATA and IDE on the same raid controller? He could raid the 120s and then use the 8 gig as a like a swap space and that would be fast! FGOKURULES Posted January 15, 2006 CID Share Posted January 15, 2006 Yeah that could work too,
resopalrabotnick Posted January 15, 2006 CID Share Posted January 15, 2006 raid 5ing the 3 120s would be good, but using the slowest drive of the lot, the 8 gig for a swap file, um, no man. just no.
Swimmer Posted January 15, 2006 CID Share Posted January 15, 2006 I wouldnt use it as swap persay more like temp storage..
