resopalrabotnick Posted January 15, 2006 CID Share Posted January 15, 2006 probably nothing wrong. just that the comp hosting the connection is likely wired direct to the modem hwile you are running off a shared wireless connection. that will slow things down. invest 50 bucks and get a router, you can get em with wireless too in case you don't want to run a cable to your comp, that should help. smacksnox Posted January 15, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 15, 2006 K i understand that hes directly connected but can you explain how i get my own router and connect it? im confused he has the router and the other box thing and then i have a little linksys wireless-B 802.11b thing that connects me to the router
resopalrabotnick Posted January 15, 2006 CID Share Posted January 15, 2006 ah, ok. so it's not his comp hosting the connection, he is a 'client' to the router just as you are. dpending on the security setting for the wireless and the signal strength you get along with any interference from the environment that will slow your speed down. my recommendation is to lay an ethernet cable from the router to the comp, a/c ducts will work well for that if available, that will ensure you get the same speed as the other comp. smacksnox Posted January 15, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 15, 2006 oh cool thanks man, so what your saying is that getting the ethernet cable will actully up my speed 50%? thats huge i didnt think a wireless adapter would slow it down that much.. 1 prob though. im upstairs and his comp is downstairs
resopalrabotnick Posted January 15, 2006 CID Share Posted January 15, 2006 see if you have a wiring duct in the house. or like i said, do you have central a/c heat? use those ducts.
