Corobi Posted January 30, 2006 CID Share Posted January 30, 2006 Okay, I recently upgraded my DSL speed from 256kb to 1.5mb and qwest sent a new modem (ActionTec GT701-WG). I also have a router (NetworkEverywhere/Linksys NR041). So heres the thing, I was able to get the internet to work and everything but it was slow on both computers connected to the network. I've tried messing around with PPPoE and PPPoA and bridging and all this stuff that I really know nothing about and I messed everything up and nothing worked. Well I finally got everything back but it's REALLY slow now. So I'm just wondering, what sort of settings do I need on both the router and the modem for a good connection? I tried getting help in the "Make it faster..." forum and a guy (trogers) made me a ccs file which he said was perfect and that the problem was elsewhere. One of the bad things I've noticed is when I run tracert. For the first 2 hops I get "request timed out." everytime and then I usually get "request timed out." for the last 1-10 hops. Also know that I'd like to have everything set up for Static IP's so I can use Port Forwarding. If you want me to run some tests I'll run them, just please help someone! Swimmer Posted January 31, 2006 CID Share Posted January 31, 2006 Is it fine just plugged into the computer?
Corobi Posted January 31, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 31, 2006 What do you mean? without the router? Another weird thing is I left my torrent up and running all night, and when it started it was getting MAX 10kb/s DL and like what I set as my limit UL. But this morning the DL speed was going up to like 25+ kb/s every once and awhile. Could the problem be that I forwarded the BitComet ports in both the router AND modem? or is that what you're supposed to do?
Corobi Posted February 1, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 1, 2006 Well I called Qwest today to find out WTH was going on and they said theres a problem in the line so they're coming over tomorrow. Hopefully they can fix the problem. I'll post my speed results tomorrow and hopefully they're near 1.5mb!
Swimmer Posted February 1, 2006 CID Share Posted February 1, 2006 well.. atleast you know what the problem is.. never posted a tracert.. that could have pinned it right at the beginning.. sorry about that my bad..
Corobi Posted February 1, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 1, 2006 Here was a saved tracert: Tracing route to qwest.net [204.147.80.81] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 * * * Request timed out. 2 * * * Request timed out. 3 42 ms 34 ms 34 ms roch-dsl-gw01-193.roch.qwest.net [209.181.190.193] 4 * 49 ms 34 ms roch-agw1.inet.qwest.net [209.181.190.125] 5 49 ms 34 ms 34 ms rch-core-01.inet.qwest.net [205.171.157.33] 6 38 ms 38 ms 38 ms mpl-core-01.inet.qwest.net [205.171.205.230] 7 39 ms 38 ms 37 ms mpl-core-02.inet.qwest.net [205.171.128.98] 8 46 ms 39 ms 38 ms min-svcs-03.inet.qwest.net [207.225.159.243] 9 * 50 ms 38 ms wwwld.uswest.net [204.147.80.81] Trace complete. The first 2 are local right? so that could have told you it was on my end or something? I tried saying that in my first post but...whatever. Help is on the way...well they will be tomorrow so...Thanks anyway. I may still need your help if something doesn't work or who knows what. I actually have a question or two...So I was looking around my modem and router setups and noticed in the DHCP section it says that only one should be on so...which one should I have on? The router's or modem's? and how would I set everything up if I wanted my computers to have static IP's? Would I turn BOTH DHCP's off? Maybe I'm way off here IDK... hurricane_floyd Posted February 2, 2006 CID Share Posted February 2, 2006 Okay I guess problem solved! The qwest guy came and ran some new wire(CAT5) because we have an older house with old phone cords or something that don't allow fast data or something. So I guess...case closed! Thanks! If it had been line noise it would have showed up in the logs in the "modem". That fix of new phone lines sounds fishy to me. Qwest must have done something else too.
