kingsy Posted February 9, 2006 CID Share Posted February 9, 2006 Ok so I'm in college and I live in an off campus apartment complex. High-Speed Internet is included in our rent from Fusion Broadband. Good connection right?? Well starting at 3am it's okay... but I just did a speed test now since it's running so slow and got 86 kbps down and 606 up. I called the company and they said that they are going to send me some diagnostic tests (THEIR speed test, ping, line, etc). It's been like this every day and finally I'm fed up with it. I had 3 exams in the past 2 days and I've been awake for 50 straight hours. I just wanted to play a game of Call of Duty 2 on xbox 360 before I passed out. Wow now I'm getting frustrated with these people. Needless to say, this company signed a contract to provide high speed internet and they can't put a good enough network in to support the complex. So I sent my apartment leasing office an email yesterday and got this back just a few minutes ago. "Yes we are aware of our Internet system. We are looking into upgrading the system but we are not sure when this will take place. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Jennifer Redd Leasing Manager" Anyone have any ideas of what I should do? Can I withhold rent and get comcast high-speed or something if they will not fix the problem? Well, that said, you may want to stay away from Fusion. Swimmer Posted February 9, 2006 CID Share Posted February 9, 2006 Is it the ISP's fault or the landlord? If it is the lSP call and they should give you credit for excessive ping to one of their servers... if it is the landlord who distributes the internet..they are probally getting a kick back.. ask them to lower the rent for a month or credit you.. I wouldnt with hold rent over internet... Cause it is working.. just not at high speed. BTW.. Welcome to the site!
kingsy Posted February 9, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 9, 2006 Can someone break this down for me? I have no idea what most of this stuff should tell me. I would like to make sure the company does not try to BS me when i here back from them. I got about 35 Kbps download on their test. Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . kingsy Posted February 9, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 9, 2006 BTW... I am running through a wireless router (D-Link di-514). my roommate is connected straight into the wall in his room and he's only getting 31 Kbps.
trogers Posted February 9, 2006 CID Share Posted February 9, 2006 estimate = 2.98 based on packet size = 11Kbits, RTT = 3734.71msec, and loss = 1.0E-6 The theoretical network limit is 2.98 Mbps The NDT server has a 8192.0 KByte buffer which limits the throughput to 17.13 Mbps Your PC/Workstation has a 250.0 KByte buffer which limits the throughput to 0.52 Mbps The network based flow control limits the throughput to 0.10 Mbps RTT = 3735 ms and network throughput limit at 0.10 Mbps? There sure is a long long signal queue at the common router. Like getting into the Super Bowl...LOL
kingsy Posted February 9, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 9, 2006 Thanks for the input.. but what does all of this stuff mean? Is there anything wrong at all on my end?
trogers Posted February 9, 2006 CID Share Posted February 9, 2006 Your comp setting is not the cause of this serious slowdown. Seems to me your landlord has only subscribed for a bandwidth good for a few tenants and then splitted it among the whole lot of you. No viable excuse on their part as it is so easy and convenient to increase the bandwidth by tenfold to the building within a week. I think a joint action/protest among the tenants may work wonders. If your bandwidth gets to normal, you will need to reduce your RWIN setting. It is now high enough to accept a 10 Mbps throughput.
kingsy Posted February 9, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 9, 2006 thanks for the advice trogers. I sent this to the manager of my rental office. [table][tr][td] Just wanted to share this with you. Something needs to be done about this soon. This is my third year living here and it's cool, but the internet has always been an on and off problem. I had to drive to another apartment's parking lot yesterday with my laptop so I could download a file that I needed for class. I shouldn't have to do that. I know you are doing your best but someone needs to light a fire under Fusion Broadband's ass. :::.. Swimmer Posted February 10, 2006 CID Share Posted February 10, 2006 that might not be the speed that you get.. that could be the 7000/512 package.. i think that price is for the 4000/384 package.. I would give it some time.. if it doesnt work call the ISP directly!
