Help! Wireless D/L speed problems

Hello!  I'm one of those noobs seeking help, which i know you guys hate seeing.  but here's the problem as the best that I can explain it, and any help would be appreciated.  It's similar to ROGMAN's issue, but not quite the same.

I too upgraded to a 3.0 mbps service just the other day.  When I'm wire connected to my router (WRT45G) using my laptop or desktop, i have no problem reaching somewhere around 370 Kb/sec download and transfer speeds.  I calculated and found this is right at the full 3.0 mbps speed that I'm supposed to be getting.

Interestingly, however, when I go wireless on my laptop, I get VERY strange speeds.  Connected to the same site (say nero.com) downloading the same material, i get only 220 Kb/sec downloads on my laptop when i'm wireless.  again, when connected to wire, i immediately get in the range of 370 Kb/sec.  It's repeatable every time at the same exact speeds, no matter if i'm sitting on top of my router, or if i'm on the other side of the house.  at 54 mbps wireless speed (which i know is more of a real world 15-25 mbps speeds), i shouldn't be anywhere close to the wireless transfer barrier, since i'm limited to 3.0 mbps.  I've checked several different sites, downloading different stuff, and at some places, i get up to 330 Kb/sec on wireless, and on some i only get 170 Kb/sec, which is no more than my old 1.5 mbps service!  Again, it's repeatable every time I try (same d/l speeds at the different sites), and again, if i connect by wire, i immediately get back to 370 Kb/sec.  I tested using wireless using the 2992 Kb file here at testmy.net and had the following:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 3014 Kbps about 3 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)

Download Speed is:: 368 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net (server1)

Test Time:: Wed Feb 22 16:26:05 CST 2006

Bottom Line:: 54X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.78 sec

Diagnosis: Looks Great : 19.18 % faster than the average for host (bellsouth.net)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-HN1MD5KRI

This says I am getting close to my full 370 Kb/sec rate.  I don't understand why I get different transfer speeds from different situations, when it appears that I can get full speed from my wireless connection without any problem, yet if I connect by wire, i do get the full speed.  I can definitely see the transfer speeds being slow when downloading via wireless, and i can definitely see it in the web page loads, which are noticeably (although not dramatically) slower than if I'm on a wire connection.

Anyone seen or heard of this issue?  more importantly, anyone have any ideas on what to do?  I haven't yet installed cablenut - the last time i tried to use cablenut when i had my 1.5 mbps service, i really screwed up my computer.  I know i'm virus and spyware clean.  i use CCleaner all the time as well.  I'm on a pure G wireless network, no interference, etc.  Any more info that is needed, please let me know!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  I just want to make sure i didn't make a mistake changing to 3.0 mbps service if i'm never going to get it wirelessly, which is what i mostly use.

Thanks!

Michael

Well, I resolved my wireless download speed problems, but created new ones, which I can't figure out or resolve yet.

I went ahead and used teh TCPOptimizer on my laptop and made the suggested changes it said to make, and viola!  Now I have my full download speeds on my laptop via wirelessly, just like I was when I was wire connected.  Not sure what those changes really had to do with my laptop?

Anyway, I solved that problem and created a new one...now I get random hangups and slow-downs when trying to open web pages.  ???  It doesn't happen all the time - in fact, it doesn't happen that often - maybe 2 or 3 times out of every 10 or so...but it never used to do that before.  I'll keep working on it, but if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!

Thanks!
