lblackwolf Posted April 25, 2006 CID Share Posted April 25, 2006 Ok, I have no idea what I'm doing half the time and that's true when I played with CableNut, some TCP/IP thing and a few others. The upshot is that I'm now getting fairly consistent rates well above my modems rate of 1mg up amd 5mg down. Sure I still get some in the 3/4mg range but 5+ is getting to be the norm. The screenshot here is my highest yet but there's hope for more. Can anyone give some idea what might really be going on?? TIA, Logan
tommie gorman Posted April 25, 2006 CID Share Posted April 25, 2006 Welcome to the forum lblackwolf First of all you can simply left click just a little further down the screen. Then right click to save to you clipboard. And then right click and paste in the post. Nice speeds. So am I to understand that 5mg down is your advertised speeds? If so, then you are doing great. lblackwolf Posted April 25, 2006 Author CID Share Posted April 25, 2006 Thanks Tommie, yes on the face of it I'm doing fantastic. But I understand modems are "locked" at their top speed you're paying for. And Shaw sure as heck isn't giving me what amounts to their extra $15.00 a month "ultra fast" 7mg down speeds. So what I'm wanting to know is if modems are locked how am I showing these rates??Logan
tommie gorman Posted April 25, 2006 CID Share Posted April 25, 2006 Several people get over or under their caps, yes. A lot of variables go into it. Since you optimized your connection with cablenut, that would be the most reason. Most people will ask you why. Just enjoy it and the forum. resopalrabotnick Posted April 25, 2006 CID Share Posted April 25, 2006 i'll take it you are paying for 5 meg. if you get more than that it's because often a modems cap will be slightly higher than the advertised speed. if you tweak a connection that has a good link you can hit that cap in the modem and actually be faster than what you pay for.
