Mr_Coffee Posted April 27, 2006 CID Share Posted April 27, 2006 O.K, I've been having some trouble with my internet speeds. I'm running Windows XP Professional with SP2. Now let me clear this up first of all. The computer I'm trying to speed up is a laptop with built in wifi. I am accessing the internet through a Wireless router (a Netgear WPN824). The router is quite good and delivers consistent speed. Normally I'd blame the lower performance on the fact that I'm wireless, but my other computer (hardwired through the router using the same connection) gets even WORSE scores then the ones below for this laptop. I disabled WEP and WPA to ensure that these features weren't lowering my speed. I'm almost sure it's the connection. As I stated in the topic, my advertised speeds are 6 Mbps. However, my results are as followed.... :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 4507 Kbps about 4.51 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 550 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Server 2) Test Time:: 2006/04/27 - 6:27pm Bottom Line:: 79X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 1.86 sec Tested from a 2992 kB file and took 5.438 seconds to complete Opera/8.54 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en) Diagnosis: 90% + Okay : running at 90.56 % of your hosts average (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-3LMOR60GV While 4.51 Mbps is certainly fast, it's nowhere near 6 megs. I'm paid an extra 2 dollars a month for 6 Mbps (versus 4). That's TWO dollars, people! My life savings. My upload speeds are as followed.... :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 201 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 386 kB) Upload Speed is:: 25 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/04/27 - 4:31pm Bottom Line:: 4X faster than 56K 1MB Upload in 40.96 sec Tested from a 386 kB file and took 15.73824 seconds to complete Opera/8.54 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en) Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 54.03 % of your hosts average (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-6IXC489BS Now that's just sad. Three times lower then the advertised 768 Kbps? I've done all the basic stuff, cleared my cache (on both computers), and updated my drivers and firmware. Also checked for viruses, spyware... yada yada. Any tips?
tommie gorman Posted April 28, 2006 CID Share Posted April 28, 2006 Welcome to the forum Mr_Coffee Have you tried bypassing the router directly to the modem? Have checked to make sure they have you on the right plan? Have you tested with the firewall, or Anti virus off? And yeah,I understand that $2 is a good downpayment on a gallon of gas.
