Swimmer Posted January 16, 2004 CID Share Posted January 16, 2004 Tracert stands for trace route or the route that the packet that you sent through the "internet" and then to is destination. The numbers i believe is the time for the packet to respond. Basically a tracert is a more advanced ping command. It does tell you what routers, servers, and switches your packet is sent through. This is really helpful if you have connection to some site but it is really slow to other. Running a tracert to find the slow router can verify that it is the router and not your connection! If you get * that means that the request timed out!!! That is not a good thing. That means that the router/switch is either under load or it was some how lost. One * isnt a big deal but if you have like 3 or more on a single tracert that would lead me to believe that here might be something wrong with your connection. CA3LE should know all about this stuff he works for COX Here is my tracert to testmy.net Tracing route to testmy.net [69.56.184.110] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 192.168.0.1 2 <10 ms 11 ms 10 ms 10.168.160.1 3 11 ms 10 ms 10 ms 68.87.227.217 4 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms 68.87.229.133 5 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms 12.118.239.57 6 10 ms 10 ms 20 ms tbr1-p012301.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.123.6.9] 7 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms ggr2-p300.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.123.6.33] 8 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms att-gw.sf.prserv.net [192.205.32.194] 9 10 ms 20 ms 10 ms p16-1-0-0.r01.chcgil06.us.bb.verio.net [129.250. 5.77] 10 30 ms 40 ms 30 ms p16-0-1-1.r20.dllstx01.us.bb.verio.net [129.250. 5.85] 11 30 ms 40 ms 30 ms ge-2-0-0.a10.dllstx01.us.ra.verio.net [129.250.3 1.58] 12 30 ms 30 ms 40 ms ge-1-1.a00.dllstx04.us.ra.verio.net [129.250.31. 44] 13 40 ms 50 ms 40 ms ge-9-3.a00.dllstx04.us.ce.verio.net [157.238.228 .38] 14 40 ms 40 ms 40 ms car2-2-v1.dllstx2.theplanet.com [12.96.160.14] 15 40 ms 40 ms 40 ms 69-56-184-110.theplanet.com [69.56.184.110] Trace complete.
