tingen Posted May 18, 2006 CID Share Posted May 18, 2006 Hi all, I am using Verizon DSL online 768Kbits plan. However, when I do the dsl speed test, it only up to 3xx Kbits or 2xx Kbits. I called the verizon tech support, they did the line test from their end. They said the line is 864 Kbits. They concluded my computer's resource is not enough for that. Today, one of the verizon tech support guy, teach me to use "tracert" command to show how the trace running. Here is the result. Tracing route to www.yahoo.akadns.net [216.109.117.204] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms dslrouter [192.168.1.1] 2 78 ms 79 ms 79 ms 10.32.70.1 3 79 ms 75 ms 80 ms P2-2.LCR-01.NYCMNY.verizon-gni.net [130.81.35.140] 4 86 ms 89 ms 88 ms so-6-0-0-0.PEER-RTR2.ASH.verizon-gni.net [130.81.17.177] 5 82 ms 85 ms 81 ms 130.81.15.170 6 83 ms 83 ms 86 ms ge-0-0-0-p100.msr1.dcn.yahoo.com [216.115.108.1] 7 71 ms 74 ms 89 ms ge10-2.bas2-m.dcn.yahoo.com [216.109.120.249] 8 86 ms 81 ms 85 ms p17.www.dcn.yahoo.com [216.109.117.204] Trace complete. Does it look okay? Does anyone know how to solve this slow problem? Thank you so much, Ting
tingen Posted May 19, 2006 Author CID Share Posted May 19, 2006 Here are the download and upload speed test. My dsl plan is 768Kbits/s. The test result seems okay at this time (1:18am, EST). The speed test was only up to 3xx Kbits/s (download test) at 7, 8, 9, 10pm. Does anyone know why there is a difference in these results? Because of people or what other factors? Thank you so much for anyone help. tingen :::.. tommie gorman Posted May 19, 2006 CID Share Posted May 19, 2006 First of all with DSL, that is pretty close. You are running at 89% of your advertised speeds. Second of all, are you on a router? If so try to test without it in the way.
tingen Posted May 20, 2006 Author CID Share Posted May 20, 2006 Thank you for your reply. I know the test, when I did in very late at night, around 1am or 2am EST, was okay. I didn't have router connected with this Westell 327W dsl modem. But, it is very strange that when I did the test at 7 to 11pm EST, the result can only up to 3XX Kbits/s. Like the very begining of this post, the trace routing take about 8x ms for going to yahoo.com at 4:56pm PST (8pm EST). It is very strange. Verizon tech support people said the line test is okay, but how come I get those slow number? Is it because many users are online during that time period? Should it be the case or not for DSL, many DSL user around will cause delay? Please educate me. Thank you so much. Tingen
