VanBuren Posted January 25, 2005 CID Share Posted January 25, 2005 hey Odysseus_____ The transmit buffer (63.0 KByte) limits the application to 3.32 Mbps is actually the testservers RWIN i have a 384000 sendbuffer in DefaultSendwindow and also get a 63KB send buffer at that test, if i use another analyzer like http://nitro.ucsc.edu/ it says i have a 101 KB sendbuffer, and thats also wrong the only thing that can limit it, is the testservers RWIN btw i see you have a MSS of 1380 and thats very unusual, the fiberoptic cablenut files i have is made for a MSS of 1460, if you want i can make a cablenut file for you is your 100 Mbps connection dedicated, or should i optimize it for 50 Mbps? VanBuren Ahhh... ok I see.. it's a server-side thing with them.... Yeah, the MSS is 1380 (I suppose our provider has it set like that.).... I have set the appropriate settings in cablenut to reflect that, but if you feel like making a tweak file for it, that would be cool. It is in fact a dedicated connection... hell, make 2 files... one for 50 Mbps and one for 100 Mbps... I'll try them both..... Thanks. ...ody... BTW - whatever tweaks you and cable are doing are working... my speeds just keep getting better.... I haven't tweaked on this machine today.... :::.. VanBuren Posted January 25, 2005 CID Share Posted January 25, 2005 ok try these since i dont have that type of bandwidth at home i have not tested them hehe but the 10 Mbps file is what i use and get good speed good luck make sure everytime you load a new file to click save to registry and reboot VanBuren

VanBuren Posted January 26, 2005 CID Share Posted January 26, 2005 dern, i think the TcpWindowsize and GlobalMaxTcpWindowsize was enough, cos i only use 64240 and pull 9.2 Mbps on a 150 ms ping however i might have set the DefaultReciveWindow and DefaultSendwindow abit high try both the 10 Mbps file and 50 Mbps file without any changes. i think that 10 Mbps would be able to pull those scores VanBuren
Odysseus_____ Posted January 26, 2005 Author CID Share Posted January 26, 2005 Ok... Done deal. I ran all of the files and they all seem to do about the same on this machine... i.e.- the performance is best when WindowScaling is on and I am running TcpWindowSize and GlobalTcpWindowSize at either 253920 or 507840.... when it's at 64380 I consistantly get speeds of 10 Mbps or lower.. with the 2 higher settings it's more like 14 Mbps.... Also, my Upstream test does better in this range so I think I'm going to leave it like this for now... It will run better once I clean this machine out as well. It's been about 2 years since it's been formatted (isn't that a shame? I format mine at the house about every 90 days or so).... Thanks for taking time to look at it though and if you have some more suggestions then let me know.... ...Ody...
VanBuren Posted January 26, 2005 CID Share Posted January 26, 2005 heya Ody if you feel like finetuning TcpWindowsize you can use this calculator http://www.dslnuts.com/bitsbytes.shtml MSS 1380 Bandwidth in KB/s ( use 9999 ) cos 12500 wont fit hehe latency to your gateway during worst possible conditions, you can test this by downloading several files until all files togheter is the same as your cap, eg on a 10 mbps line, 3 diffrent downloads one running at 250 KB/s and the other 2 at 500KB/s each (it can be some problems maxing out a 100 Mbps connection) for my connection it works best with 52 ms, but for cable and dsl between 200 and 300 ms so you can test same value as i got 52 ms that give you a TcpWindowSize of 518880 thats also multiple with your MSS the DefaultReciveWindow should be 1024 x (your cap in KB/s ) to max out the connection, but i use a lower value then that i use 384000 and thats for a cap of 384000 / 1024 = 375 KB/s = 375 x 8 = 3 Mbps and thats around 1 / 3 of my total bandwidth so i would suggest the following settings DefaultReciveWindow = 12500 x 1024 = 12800000 / 3 = 4266666 DefaultSendWindow = 12500 x 1024 = 12800000 / 3 = 4266666 TcpWindowSize = 518880 GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 518880 Tcp1323Opts = 1 all other setting as the 100 Mbps file i send you good luck VanBuren
VanBuren Posted January 27, 2005 CID Share Posted January 27, 2005 DefaultReciveWindow = 12500 x 1024 = 12800000 / 3 = 4266666 DefaultSendWindow = 12500 x 1024 = 12800000 / 3 = 4266666 Noticed this was a mistake by me, those 4266666 should be multiple with 1024 so use this value instead 4266666 / 1024 = 4166,666015625 = round up to 4167 x 1024 = 4267008 VanBuren

VanBuren Posted January 27, 2005 CID Share Posted January 27, 2005 heya Ody yea something stopping you from going higher then this, my sister has 100 Mbps fiber at home and with win XP default settings she get around 26 Mbps on a testserver located 25 ms away. her boyfriend loaded up almost same tweaks as this pulled 93 Mbps down and around 70 Mbps up yea you also get very sweet speed, and you should be happy VanBuren
Odysseus_____ Posted January 27, 2005 Author CID Share Posted January 27, 2005 Yeah, I dunno what the deal is... Actually the people that manage the complex say that the offices are supposed to be limited to about 4 mbps up and down..... but apparently there's a little more headroom.... I mean 4 DS3 lines is alot of bandwidth... especially if they're multiplexed.... I'm just going to enjoy it as long as I work there... and I'll reguarly be adding hard drives as I use them up... lol

VanBuren Posted January 27, 2005 CID Share Posted January 27, 2005 That prove you have access to atleast 35 Mbps, both ways, it might be a routing issue and thats why you score so much better on the other test compared to testmy.net not long ago theplanet had some big routing issues to the path im using and i scored around 300 Kbps down lol it is fixed now, and after CA3LE tweaked it i get constant scores no matter how much ppl that are on server. i still think the uploadtest here is not accurate for fat pipes, my upload and your upload should be around the same as download. When uploading, the speed will be depending on the server RWIN, if the server RWIN is low it wont matter how huge sendwindow i set at my end. for cable and dsl up to around 1 Mbps it seems very accurate i have a huge sendbuffer of 384000 and on a 150 ms ping im limited to around 2500 KB/s ( way above my cap of 1250 ) still my speed stops at around 200 KB/s constant speed if the server downloading in 200 KB/s on a 150 ms ping it will need a RWIN of tiny 29200 VanBuren
VanBuren Posted January 27, 2005 CID Share Posted January 27, 2005 Hey vanburen how much is 100mbs over there!!!? Installation costs to your house is around 1500 USD, then a monthly cost of around 85 USD / month with a 300 GB transfer limit / month on my 10 Mbps package i have no traffic limit and pay around 40 USD / month VanBuren
Odysseus_____ Posted January 28, 2005 Author CID Share Posted January 28, 2005 ...with a 300 GB transfer limit / month... Just to put that in perspective for all.... 300 GB ain't alot with a connection like that. When I first set up my newsgroup account on my office connection, I downloaded about 15 gigs that day in about 3-4 hours.... had to get the unlimited Giga-News account... Now I just need more hard drive because that goes away really quickly now.
