  1. Yeah, forums definitely aren't what they used to be. It's a shame in this case; there was always some useful information, particularly with optimizing one's connection and whatnot. I see SpeedGuide.net is still around too. I just wonder how a lot of the old tweaks relate to today's technology. For instance, I'm on 1Gb up/down fiber right now. Back then, you only saw that overseas. Another thing is most people don't understand that when you pay for a 1 Gb/sec connection to your house, you aren't necessarily going to see those speeds all the time. You are paying for a connection that is *capable* of those speeds. On my connection, when actually downloading and not testing, I may see 700 Mb/s IF the host allows enough simultaneous connections. Otherwise, it's 300-500 or so. It varies a lot. Hell TMN shows me about 200 Mb/sec if I'm lucky. But in comparison to all the other scores on the same provider, it's not bad.
  2. Hi All! 14 years ago I made an account here, and man oh man have things changed in that time. At the time, I had a connection at work that was "fast" compared to a lot of people in the US because I was hanging on 3 multiplexed DS3's.. at the time it provided me a whopping 45 Mbits of bandwidth. I thought I was hot stuff.. Anyway, good to be back; glad to see the forum is still active. Odysseus_____
  3. Thanks all. Funniest thing about it is, when I called and did the upgrade it turned out being about 50 cents a month cheaper than when I had the 3 meg service. I guess because of the bundle I had with them or something.
  4. Just switched from 3 megs to the 6.0 service.. this is what I got after about 5 min of tweaking.. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Download Connection is:: 6482 Kbps about 6.48 Mbps (tested with 5983 kB) Download Speed is:: 791 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/10/11 - 8:11pm Bottom Line:: 113X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 1.29 sec Tested from a 5983 kB file and took 7.562 seconds to complete Download Diagnosis:: Awesome! 20% + : 103.9 % faster than the average for host (bellsouth.net) D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-NH70MKL1U User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727) [!] I'm pretty happy with that I suppose.
  5. Normally, I go to bed around 12 or 1 AM.... but for the last week I been playing World of Warcraft and that's moved me into the 3-4 AM category... Makes for some long days at work when you gotta get up at 6:30... but as the above post said, I'll sleep when I'm dead.
  6. I wanna learn more about making themes for phpNuke... Anyone got any good sites I can get some info from?
  7. Awesome... have you tweaked yet or not?
  8. Man.. I can't wait for someone to offer something like that for my home connection... that will be awesome. Congrats!
  9. I'm suspecting that it's one of 2 things.... Could be that it slows down fat connections like the one I'm on, or maybe my computer here at the office is the bottleneck.. .I already know that it gets bogged down when I run the test, and maybe it's getting more lagged with having to update the progress bar... (It's a really old machine).... WDBUTCH, what kind of system are you on (CPU, memory, etc) ?
  10. He just keeps going, and going, and going..... (Now really, who didn't see that one coming?) :haha:
  11. I used Zone Alarm Pro 4.0 for a long time... but I don't run one now at the office... the network guys keep everything pretty safe and it's monitored 24/7... At home I was using ZAP 4.0 as well, but now I just rely on my trusty ol' Netgear FVS-318.... seems to do a good job with everything. Note: ** If you are using F-Secure for Antivirus protection, there are alot of firewalls it will not work with... It works with ZAP 4.0, but not any of the later versions... Will not work with Outpost, Seems to work with Kerio but I don't use it... Don't know about others..... Also, I've read alot of complaints with ZoneAlarn, though I've never had any major issues with it... always seemed to do ok for me.
  12. It's odd... everytime I reboot, and come to the site to test a tweak I've done, the first run I make looks like this.... "Sorry, your score of 66764 Kbps is over TestMy.net's max of 60000 Kbps. I doubt your connection is faster than 60000 Kbps... Please RETEST" Which is of course what a cached result looks like, but I'm wondering why it does it on the first run after a reboot... It never fails... here's the second run.... :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 24379 Kbps about 24.4 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB) Download Speed is:: 2976 kB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Fri Mar 11 13:34:21 CST 2005 Bottom Line:: 435X faster than 56K 1MB download in 0.34 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 65.79 % faster than the average for host (35.111) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-WCXLG2VK6 Ever run after the first looks pretty much like the above run... No biggie... Just wonder what it is.
  13. That would be my suggestion. Assuming all of the tweaks were done correctly, the next thing would be to have them come check the lines and equipment... It's possible they need to replace the modem or maybe run a new drop...
