Buntz Posted September 27, 2007 CID Share Posted September 27, 2007 This is what Wikpedia says Ping is. Ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network. It works by sending ICMP

akuyume Posted November 1, 2007 CID Share Posted November 1, 2007 what's with this ping?! can i do actions about them, i forgot what site it is.. but it says my ping is high.. the site also mentioned am i U.S. based? Im not im from the philippines... ping can be affected by several things. to name the biggest: distance between client (you) and server (the website who says you have a high ping), network traffic at both ends of the connection and all the machines between the client and the server, and the processing capabilities of these machines. put simply, your ability to improve a ping depends on where the slowest point is. try using pathping
FallowEarth Posted November 1, 2007 CID Share Posted November 1, 2007 Traceroute is another good ICMP resource. Ping tells you how long it takes to get from your computer to the server you are testing against and back. Traceroute goes into further detail by showing you the response time from every router/server that you hit between your computer and the server. This is a good way to determine at which point in the route to the server you are experiencing latency. Try it out (from the command line): tracert testmy.net
