122performance Posted December 19, 2007 CID Share Posted December 19, 2007 Ok, I have spent all day searching, Googling, reading, and attempting to figure out what is wrong, and cant seem to figure this out. I am on Windows XP Home Edition and have Verizon DSL base DSL plan. It seemed to work fine when we first got it 3 weeks ago but starting about 2 weeks ago it seemed to get worse and now its just horrible. I have done everything Verizon recommends including: checking all filters, connections, etc running defrag, cleaning up cache/history resetting modem rebooting laptop After two calls to them we have tried running in safe mode, disabling the firewall, and removing AVG altogether. They seem to think that after all this its a PC issue and not on them. At first both techs were reporting issues on their end, but after being on the phone a certain amount of time they seemed to conclude it was not an issue on their end. The last guy suggested a port being used by some sort of malware/virus, etc. I have ran AVG, Spybot and Adaware but come up with nothing. I dont do any file sharing (limewire, mule, etc) I try not to click on anyhting I shouldnt, and I try to keep the computer maintained with regular clean up and decent protection. It just seems odd the DSL seemed to do ok at first but now basically doesnt work at all. It wont even finish a speed test on Speakeasy, does the download but wont start the upload, and Speedtest.net is where it shows a 4k bps if it even works at all. How do you check/monitor ports? Do you keep your modem near any other electronic devices (ie. monitor, TV, router, computer)? Are you connecting wirelessly with your laptop to a router? What are your laptop stats? What kind of router are you using? Did you buy it new or refurbished? Can you show me a traceroute: (from cmd) tracert testmy.net -d and also a 50 hop ping (from cmd) ping testmy.net -n 50 I need to see something with some consistency rather than snapshots of your network state. It has been reset a few times and turned on/off NUMEROUS times to try and get it to work better. Do you keep your modem near any other electronic devices (ie. monitor, TV, router, computer)? The modem is within two feet of the laptop, but it worked fine at first. I can move it away if you think that is an issue. Are you connecting wirelessly with your laptop to a router? I was, but since trying to troubleshoot I decided it best to hook directly via ethernet cable. What are your laptop stats? Im at work right now, but I will get that for you asap. FallowEarth Posted December 19, 2007 CID Share Posted December 19, 2007 Sorry, I wasn't very clear. To access "CMD" click start > run > and type cmd in the "Open:" field. This will bring you to the command prompt (like MSDOS). Then try the commands I put above, ping and traceroute. You can copy from CMD by right-clicking the screen and choosing "Mark". I took it over to the office today where we just got the same DSL setup from Verizon, and it pulled 740 download and 130 upload speeds. I would assume by this it eliminates any issues with the laptop/operating system? I have checked all the lines/filters in the house, and just tried a different jack but it didnt help. FallowEarth Posted December 20, 2007 CID Share Posted December 20, 2007 The ping is showing consistent packet loss, and the router is pointing to an issue with the connection between your router (on the first hop) and your modem (on the 2nd). leopold99 Posted December 21, 2007 CID Share Posted December 21, 2007 They seem to think that after all this its a PC issue and not on them. i've had verizon DSL for awhile. i have not had any problems with my connection except when the phone lines were torn down by a tree. the only real problem, if you want to call it that, is i live about a mile from the telephone exchange. i pay for a 3mbps connection. my download speed is anywhere from 1mbps to 2.8mbps. it averages about 2.5mbps. and then there is tech support. i must admit that verizon tech support is, well, different than most. all in all, i would recommend verizon DSL.
