Cable Modem Signals

Hey long time no see. This is a weird situation. It seems that having a cable hooked right to the cable modem gives me a weaker signal when splitting it off gives it more. Dad didnt like the splitting off part.... so this is connected directly to the modem. Good or bad signals?
