MattOG Posted February 21, 2005 CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 Ok, Firstly, I'm gonna apolgize for the length of this, but i'll be damned if i'm gonna miss something out. As you can see, my connection speed is pants. Always has been. Hopefully we can fix this together. I am also a member of the tweakxp forum, as well as a few others, and have tried a few things to no avail, so all got set back to the original settings awaiting (expert) advice from here. (p.s. I have tried VB's updated cablenut settings and no joy) I have basically read through all this forum follwing all the tips, and losing more and more hair, until i figured that i really don't have a clue what else to do, so I just followed the instruction given by VanBuren (as you can see below). VanBuren Posted February 21, 2005 CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 hey MattOG and welcome to the forum first we need to clean up abit download Dr.Tcp http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe open it and make sure all setting is default, and erase every value you see ( use delete key ) all fields must be blank, now click apply and exit open cablenut adjuster, click dlete cablenut tweaks and click save to registry now reboot and make a new tweaktest and post result VanBuren
MattOG Posted February 21, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 Thanks 4 swift reply. Below is the new Tweaktest URL. http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:5730c3?service=dsl&speed=512&os=winXP&via=pppoA
VanBuren Posted February 21, 2005 CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 There is a MTU problem, it might be your router giving you wrong MTU bypass your router and connect direct to modem, make a new tweaktest and post result VanBuren
MattOG Posted February 21, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 Router & Modem all in one. Can't bypass it (or at least i don't know how.)
VanBuren Posted February 21, 2005 CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 set the MTU as high as possible
MattOG Posted February 21, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 okay, have set it to 5000, only problem is that tweaktest has stopped working, think i've gone over my allocated "5 tests in a few hours."
VanBuren Posted February 21, 2005 CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 okay, have set it to 5000, only problem is that tweaktest has stopped working, think i've gone over my allocated "5 tests in a few hours." omg 5000 is too high, i thought it had a limit of 1500, well maybe router will auto adjust it down i dont know, if not you need to set it to 1500 run this analyzer instead http://forums.speedguide.net:8117/ copy all text and paste it here VanBuren
MattOG Posted February 21, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 Ok, set it back to 1500 clicked on the link and this is what showed............... TCP options string = 0204058c01010402 MTU = 1460 MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. MSS = 1420 MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value. Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535 RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits Unscaled Receive Window = 65535 Note: Under Windows 9x, if you have RWIN set to any other value, and the Analyzer reports 65535 you might need to install the MS Vtcp386 fix. For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS. Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS: 522560 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 261280 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4) 130640 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2) 65320 (MSS x 46) bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test): Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON Time to live left = 116 hops TTL value is ok. Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 And yes, it is 1500, though this says 1460.....not sure whats going on there. VanBuren Posted February 21, 2005 CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 1460 is probl the highest possible manual set 1460 on your router and check speed use 2992 KB test downstream and 1496 KB upstream, i will make a tweakfile for you VanBuren
VanBuren Posted February 21, 2005 CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 download this attached file, its made for MTU 1460 unzip it to C:ProgramCablenut open cablenut, in top left corner, click file, load custom settings file, browse to C:ProgramCablenut and dubbleclick on the file you unzipped now you have some values in adjuster, click save to registry and reboot VanBuren
MattOG Posted February 21, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 Ok, done the stuff requested. Results below. ******************************** After 1460 & 512 Cablenut ******************************** :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 243 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Upload Speed is:: 30 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Mon Feb 21 21:36:53 UTC 2005 Bottom Line:: 4X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 34.13 sec Diagnosis: Looks Great : 3.85 % faster than the average for host (aol.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/id-SZNV64P19 :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 245 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB) Download Speed is:: 30 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Mon Feb 21 21:39:30 UTC 2005 Bottom Line:: 4X faster than 56K 1MB download in 34.13 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 16.21 % of your hosts average (aol.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/id-DTI2ECL5U I am getting a tad suspicious that it always caps at 30kbps, both upload and download. Out of curiosity, on my router setup screen it says: Data Rate Downstream/Upstream 576Kb/288Kb I take it that this is what it is "supposed" to be. I have never seen these figures change, so it looks like they're sent, not detected, but I'll keep my eyes on it.

MattOG Posted February 21, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 Ok, results below, TCP options string = 020405640103030101010402 MTU = 1420 MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. MSS = 1380 MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value. Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 71680 RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits (scale factor of 2) Unscaled Receive Window = 35840 RWIN is not fully optimized (even though it is a comparatively large number). The unscaled RWIN value is lower than it should be, which can affect your connection to some servers. Also, RWIN being close above 65535 does not justify the header overhead of scaling. You might want to use one of our recommended RWIN values below. For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS. Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS: 507840 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 253920 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4) 126960 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2) 63480 (MSS x 46)
MattOG Posted February 21, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 Okay, after messing with a few settings, (namely the MTU and RWIN) I finally got a load of green bits, instead of red. Below are the results. TCP options string = 020405b40103030301010402 MTU = 1500 MTU is fully optimized for broadband. MSS = 1460 Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS. Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 513920 RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits (scale factor of 6) Unscaled Receive Window = 64240 RWIN is a multiple of MSS Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS: 256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4) 128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2) 64240 (MSS x 44)
