Onibus Posted February 24, 2005 CID Share Posted February 24, 2005 You may remember my post about the slow speeds i was getting. I think i found the problem. My sister recently got a computer that has a "VIA Velocity" onboard ethernet card and when i use testmy.net to test speed, i get the full 4Mbps. However, when i use my onboard RealTek 6169 on my comp, i'm only hitting 2.5-3Mbps. Same thing w/ my other card (Realtek 6139). Could it be Realtek that would be the problem? I updated the drivers for both of them, but to no avail. BTW: used version 5 of cablenut settings... i even used a slower setting on my sister's and it still is hitting 4Mbps ><. We're connected to a router, and the modem's right beside me. I've done almost everything I can, but I would like to know if the speeds could be affected by realtek's ethernet card. I also noticed there was something called "High speed interrupt" setting under hardware settings... Thanks van (or anyone who answers). My computer (realtek) :::.. VanBuren Posted February 24, 2005 CID Share Posted February 24, 2005 hey Onibus i couldnt find a 6169 driver, are you sure its not a 8169? i have a 8169 PCI card 10/100/1000 http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx?Keyword=8169 try this force your NIC to 100 Mbps full duplex this is a guide how to change duplex settings to 10 Mbps half, ignore that and use 100 Mbps full cos you connect to a router quote from http://dslnuts.com/tips_tricks.shtml "HOW TO SET THE PROPER NIC DUPLEX SETTINGS: Win98/ME: to change to half-duplex: * Open Control Panel. * Double-click Network. * From the scrollable list, select your Ethernet adapter (rather than any dial-up) with a green icon. * Click the button Properties. * Click the tab Advanced to bring it to the front: * In the Property box, the property name to be selected varies according to model of ethernet card. Examples are: Network Link Selection, Media Type, Connection Type, Duplex Mode, or any similarly-named property which can have Values looking like Auto-Negotiation, or 10BT, or 10BaseT. * In the Value box, select a value which either (a) explicitly says half-duplex or semi-duplex, or ( at least does not say full-duplex [e.g. 10BaseT on its own is OK]. If there is a choice between 10 and 100 with half-duplex, choose the 10. Do not choose 10Base5, 10Base2, or AUI. * Click OK to exit the Adapter settings. * Click OK all the way out - you might need to restart. Windows 2000 or XP: to change to half-duplex: * Open Control Panel. * Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections. * Identify the icon for your cable modem connection: usually Local Area Connection. * Right-click that icon and select Properties. * Under the ethernet adapter icon, click the button Configure. VanBuren Posted February 24, 2005 CID Share Posted February 24, 2005 download this driver unless you have it installed already Auto installation program (support Win981st/Win98SE/WinME/Win2K/WinXP ver.620) http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx?Keyword=8169 VanBuren
Onibus Posted February 24, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 24, 2005 I've done that, I have the latest drivers from realtek. I don't know if system specs matter, but I'll say what I have. My comp AMD 64 2800+ MSI K8T800 80GB 8mb cache Western Digital (separate IDE to board) 120GB 8mb cache Western Digital (separate IDE on PCI ATA controller) her comp AMD 64 3200+ Abit Uguru Western Digital 74GB raptor VIA Velocity gigabit onboard ethernet I've also tried setting the rwin to the lowest possible, but it seems nothing will kill the connection =( (i'm using 4000/384 v5 in cablenut). Onibus Posted February 25, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 25, 2005 UPDATE I believe i found the problem. When i used commview to watch traffic on my connection/router, i noticed a lot of hits on port 8331. Probably not a big thing to worry about, but i read your sticky and saw the sygate firewall (which i heard a lot about). Lo and behold, when i installed it, my connect jumps from 3Mbps to 4Mbps =D :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 4271 Kbps about 4.3 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB) Download Speed is:: 521 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Thu Feb 24 2005 18:34:22 GMT-0600 (Central Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 76X faster than 56K 1MB download in 1.97 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 38.49 % faster than the average for host (Comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/id-OG5SD3ETA I'll test w/o a firewall in a sec edit: I just killed the firewall, and it seems my speeds are still hitting the 4Mbps. Iono what happened, but it's ok now =D. I followed a couple of the steps in the sticky, but it was mostly the ccleaner i did. The only problem is that the results page is taking forever to load =(
