peepnklown Posted March 24, 2005 CID Share Posted March 24, 2005 This is going to take some work since SP2 requires a lot of tweaking. https://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php TCP Optimizer, and install all the tweaks that relate to you. https://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497 Windows XP SP2 tweaking You also might want to scan for spy-ware. ralfstore Posted March 25, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 25, 2005 Thank you for the advices. I tried them but unfortunately with any success. I think I will be able to improve the speed experimenting with different tweaks but the real problem is that whatever the initial speed is, it goes down dramatically during the Internet session every time! It is even difficult to use the mouse because the arrow hardly is moving. After rebooting everything is initially ok until the same is happening. I have run anti-spy and virus programs and found no problems. Would this sound familiar to somebody please give a hint!
php Posted March 25, 2005 CID Share Posted March 25, 2005 whats the specs on your computer? also, how about many programs do you have running?
peepnklown Posted March 26, 2005 CID Share Posted March 26, 2005 It sounds more like a computer problem than an internet problem. Post your computer specs and what programs you are running and how many programs are running in the background (little icons on the right hand side)
ralfstore Posted March 27, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 27, 2005 The computer specs are as follows (unfortunately in Finnish language) but you may understand the main points: Win XL home + SP2, Processor 3.2 MHz, Memory 1 G, harddisk 300 G. I have 4 icons visible on the right hand side: network status indicator, Open Office quick start icon, Virus control, Windows messinger. ralfstore Posted March 27, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 27, 2005 Here is the dsl tweak test. I have done it before without troubles, now it does not report any rcvWindow etc. http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:4bb397b?service=dsl&speed=8000&os=winXP&via=normal I did the same with speedguide: SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer TCP properties for IP = 80.223.236.110 () Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322) Notes: Read the Analyzer FAQ if the above is not your IP address. TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402 MTU = 1500 MTU is fully optimized for broadband. MSS = 1460 Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS. Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960 RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits (scale factor of 4) Unscaled Receive Window = 64240 RWIN is a multiple of MSS Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS: 513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2) 64240 (MSS x 44)
VanBuren Posted March 27, 2005 CID Share Posted March 27, 2005 what speed do you get here http://speedtest.adslguide.org.uk:8080/speedtest.html and here http://cemp1.switch.ch/network/performance/web100/tcpbw100.html VanBuren
ralfstore Posted March 27, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 27, 2005 ADSLguide reported on the first try 434 down and 190 up. Then I went to the swiss site and the ersult was 474 down and 546 up. Then I returned to ADSLguide: 177 down and 227 up. Testmy.net gave 371 down and 192 up.
VanBuren Posted March 27, 2005 CID Share Posted March 27, 2005 i assume you have cablenut, if not download it here https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1013.0;id=64 also download Dr.Tcp http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe now open Dr.Tcp, make sure it look exactly like this attached picture, click save ( if you see values in any field, use delete key to erase them ) now open Cablenut, click delete cablenut tweaks and click save to registry set your NIC to 100 Mbps full duplex on your NIC when using the router here is a guide how to set duplex settings, ignore 10 Mbps half and use 100 Mbps full instead since your using a router quote from http://dslnuts.com/tips_tricks.shtml "Windows 2000 or XP: to change to half-duplex: * Open Control Panel. * Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections. * Identify the icon for your cable modem connection: usually Local Area Connection. * Right-click that icon and select Properties. * Under the ethernet adapter icon, click the button Configure. * Click the tab Advanced to bring it to the front: * In the Property box, the property name to be selected varies according to model of ethernet card. Examples are: Network Link Selection, Media Type, Connection Type, Duplex Mode, or any similarly-named property which can have Values looking like Auto-Negotiation, or 10BT, or 10BaseT. * In the Value box, select a value which either (a) explicitly says half-duplex or semi-duplex, or ( at least does not say full-duplex [e.g. 10BaseT on its own is OK]. If there is a choice between 10 and 100 with half-duplex, choose the 10. Do not choose 10Base5, 10Base2, or AUI. * Click OK to exit the Adapter settings. * Click OK to exit the Connection properties." now reboot and make a new speedtest against the servers above this will restore your TCP settings to default, it might be settings that dosent show up in analyzer thats wrong, so its easyer this way to eliminate that risk VanBuren
ralfstore Posted March 28, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 28, 2005 I have done all you requested and am back to default. NIC setting was already 100 Bbps full duplex. Speeds with default settings: adslguide.org.uk tested download 609 and 403 (30 minutes later) and upload 285 both times. cemp1.switch.ch tested 1240 and 788 download and upload to 760 both times. As information they suggested a receive buffer of ca. 41.2 kbytes (330kbps) in the first test and ca. 525 kbps in the second. VanBuren Posted March 28, 2005 CID Share Posted March 28, 2005 this is what i found in that tweaktest RTT min: 163.7 ms RTT max: 969.7 ms RTT avg: 519.2 ms RTT stdev: 176.1 ms I dont think i can help fixing that, what you can do before you call your ISP is changing the LAN cables between router/modem and your PC, also check your phonewire, if you have a extension wire, i suggest to get rid of that and place your modem next to your main phone jack from that you can use a LAN cable to the PC since you have a combinated router/modem, you probl cant upgrade firmware but if you can, try that aswell when you fixed that loss, post again and i can help you tweak good luck VanBuren
