FallowEarth Posted July 3, 2005 CID Share Posted July 3, 2005 Hey Gib4500. Cablenut is good for tweaking your speeds out when you are close to your cap but want to max out your speed. It will only up the speed maybe 10-15%, but it will not take you from 1.3 Mbps up to 4 Mbps. It is likely that there is something in your network or on your computer that is interfering. Are you connected to a router? Are you running any firewalls or antivirus programs? Basically any program that has Internet access can slow down the speeds, or affect the speed test. P2P's, IM's, optimizers/toolbars, etc. can be interfering with your results, so it is best to simplify the connection by shutting these programs down when testing. Have you checked out https://testmy.net/forum/t-2097 and https://testmy.net/topic-4257 ? Also if you could run a traceroute and post results (omit your own IP address(es), the first one or two): Windows XP/2000: click start, then run. type cmd and click ok. on the command line type: tracert testmy.net
Gib4500 Posted July 3, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 3, 2005 yes i am connected to a router. i run the built in windows firewall and avast anti-virus. i did leave aim open and those im programs. i ran the traceroute and it came out with pings all under 100. i can't get it to copy and paste or i would paste it on here. it runs through adelpia net then the planet.com. i also have the latest router firmware and latest nic drivers. i will check those things. i am curently running on xp 64 bit trial. thanks for the help. Gib4500 Posted July 6, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 6, 2005 well i talked to an adelphia tech. he said i should see at least 2mb down on the plan i'm on. the tech said i could try a different modem and see if that helps. i also tested a couple of my neighbors connections and it turns out they get the same basic slow speeds. i smell something fishy in my area. FallowEarth Posted July 6, 2005 CID Share Posted July 6, 2005 Are you connected through a router? I mention this because line 2 of your traceroute is a little high if you are on a router, might be an incompatibility issue there. If you have a router, could you provide the make and model, and also make and model of your modem.
Gib4500 Posted July 6, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 6, 2005 yes i am connected through a router. it is a d-link 604. the modem is a motorolla sb5100. i tried the connection straight from the modem to the computer and i basically got the same speed. maybe the modem needs a firmware upgrade. FallowEarth Posted July 6, 2005 CID Share Posted July 6, 2005 It could be firmware, but I know that modem is designed to update automatically.
