Guest Mr stumpywang Posted September 9, 2005 CID Share Posted September 9, 2005 OK how many of us have tested our download capabilities ONLY to get frustrated again and again because no one can seem to explain why the repeated download testing seemed to hang, go, hang, go and so on and so on.. This seemed to me to cause quite erratic download evaluations. Well, this was happening to me for the last several years and finally I got fed-up. Comast is my ISP and I am suppose to get 4000 kbps down and 384kbps up. After repeated testing I would see ranges from 1000 kbps (if the download test hanged more than once) to 4400 kbps if there were no hangs in the download process testing. Anyway, I don't remember what caused me to research the topic but it was something I saw in a Microsoft tech site. I decided to look at the, "Event Viewer" Go to Start menu ->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools (icon)->Event Viewer. Double click the Event Viewer icon to open this and on the left pane double click the, "System log file. This will open the logs for your system where you can view all recorded logs for your system. Try to focus on the Error logs these will alert you to a possible problems in your system as they did for me. I found that years ago I downloaded a program called, Roger Wilco and this program seemed to be trying to make contact with a Sever and this seemed to be causing the erratic download tests I was seeing in Testmy.net. I deleted the files from my main directory (C:/) but found I was still having the problems. Therefore I reviewed the error logs again and sure enough there was the errors again. This time I went into the Registry and deleted all references to Roger Wilco. I rebooted my system and after that, NO MORE DOWNLOAD TEST HANG-UPS. My download testing is smooth now without the tiniest hesitation (see test results below). Well, this worked for me what you find on your Event Error logs might help you find your particular problem. Anyway, I hope I have been of help to all of those who like me have experienced the frustration of download testings erratic behavior. Any questions please post or email back.
