chimar Posted November 24, 2005 CID Share Posted November 24, 2005 Hi there. I really need help since i'm nowhere close to the advertised speed of the isp which already is not fast (broadband connections are really expensive in Greece where i'm from) so every single Kbit counts. Your site looks promising, hope it delivers. I followed the instructions from VanBuren. 1.WinXP SP2 2.forthnet.gr , 384/128 3.None until step 15. Unfortunately i forgot to save the url before step 15 so here is the url after step 15: http://www.broadbandreports.com/tweakr/block:3c5286d?service=dsl&speed=384&os=winXP&via=normal 4.Here is where the fun starts. I ran many times the d/l tests against testmy.net and every time the result was different, from very dissapointing to really good (which unfortunately happened only once). I actually sat and watched the networking tab of the task manager during some of them and it was full of peaks and bottoms and no sign of normality whatsoever. I hope the fact that i ran the tests from Greece doesn't affect the credibility of their results. Here are some (sorry for the size of the post): Before Cablenut: :::.. I even think there is a difference when i test with iexplorer instead of firefox (or vice versa). Any other suggestions? Could the problem be isp related? I certainly hope not.. chimar Posted November 24, 2005 Author CID Share Posted November 24, 2005 Well thanks for the good words But i'm still worried because even if the fact that i'm so far way from Texas has an impact on the test results it doesn't explain why i have slow d/l speed using p2p or d/loading from servers located in Europe, always compared to what speed my friends have with the same connection but with different isp's. My conclusion is that the problem is concerning the isp and not any settings because the test you're referring to actually took place before i used cablenut. Broadband is encountering some childhood difficulties here in Greece hehe. Anyway thnx a lot. At least i learned a few interesting things concerning dsl
VanBuren Posted November 24, 2005 CID Share Posted November 24, 2005 no problem Some ISP
chimar Posted November 24, 2005 Author CID Share Posted November 24, 2005 I 'm really sorry to bother you once again but i'm getting pretty desperate. I ran these tests several times during the last few days and only twice this morning did I see good results like the above. Though they obviously show the potential of the connection they do not correspond to the truth. The truth is that i d/l with an average of 12 kB/s from p2p while others get as high as 37-40 with the same connection/different isp, and from servers at around 15-20 kB/s (again everyone else seems to have better speeds). Also online gaming is out of the question (which i suppose is not a matter of download speed but i describe the whole problem) even with servers which are located no more than 3 km far from where i live. Playing counterstrike with a latency of 300 ms is a joke, and a bad one. Sorry for my getting out of the subject and for my petty whining but i could use some help. My questions are if and how can I identify what causes the problem and if you can tell me specific questions I should ask my isp when I call them tomorrow. P.S. Additional Information: I setup the connection and the router according to the router's manual (US Robotics 9105) and portforward.com. Tested the ports and where ok. System configuration Athlon 64 3500+,1GB ram,Nvidia GeForce 6600GT. The possibility of a virus is unlikely because the HD was formatted recently and the pc wasn't connected to the internet for some time. FallowEarth Posted November 25, 2005 CID Share Posted November 25, 2005 You may have better luck testing from a mirror closer to you. There is one in Germany (https://testmy.net/o-mirror-just-) and one in Sweden (https://testmy.net/o-mirror-VanBuren) But your traceroute shows a very good connection. chimar Posted November 25, 2005 Author CID Share Posted November 25, 2005 I ran again the tests now and they showed excellent results both against the Texas server and the european mirrors. I guess it's not the connection after all the reason I get low d/l speed and lousy gaming. Thnx to all
