  1. I had already run three other scans with nothing very severe showing up. Based on the above, I ran the EWIDO scan, and sure enough it found two instances of a "high threat". I allowed the program to delete the entries and rebooted to find my machine back to normal. I am heading back to the above link to install this FREE software. Thanks for your help.
  2. I do not use IE (Internet Explorer) as my browser. It is not THAT "explorer" that is causing the problem. Gotta love MS naming both programs almost the same thing.
  3. When I boot up my P4 WIN XP Media Edition machine, all CPU time is consumed by explorer.exe to the point of bringing the system to its knees. When I manually stop explorer.exe from the task manager and then immediately launch a new explorer.exe, the system works normally. I have read a little about corrupt .AVI files, but that apparently is not the problem. Thanks for your help.
  4. We had an advertised cable outage early this morning - no problem. Tonight, after the outage, my speed has dropped abt 3,000 Kbps and it is impossible to get hold of Tech Support either by phone or via their chat. My speeds went from a respectable 4,250 Kbps to just over 1,000 Kbps. Anyone else in Seal Beach/Orange County noticing their connection has slowed down? Funny thing is that the Adelphia Speed Test website does NOT reflect this slowdown. There I get the usual results. This first section is from Adelphia's speed test site: http://speedtest.adelphia.net/customerdiag/speedtest/ QUOTE Your Past Run Speed Test Results Jul 08, 2005 8:30 PM Los Angeles, California 1 Download 4340.128 Kbps Jul 08, 2005 8:30 PM Los Angeles, California 1 Upload 444.104 Kbps Jul 08, 2005 7:48 PM Los Angeles, California 1 Download 4592.464 Kbps Jul 08, 2005 7:48 PM Los Angeles, California 1 Upload 443.624 Kbps Jul 06, 2005 9:43 PM Los Angeles, California 1 Download 4523.128 Kbps Jul 06, 2005 9:43 PM Los Angeles, California 1 Upload 444.056 Kbps Jul 02, 2005 6:15 PM Los Angeles, California 1 Download 4547.656 Kbps Jul 02, 2005 6:15 PM Los Angeles, California 1 Upload 444.104 Kbps Jun 28, 2005 9:13 PM Los Angeles, California 1 Download 4349.128 Kbps Jun 28, 2005 9:13 PM Los Angeles, California 1 Upload 443.624 Kbps Back to Speed Test Page UNQUOTE This next section is from TESTMY.NET - You will note that the two sites pretty much give same results UNTIL today. Please compare the highlighted areas. Other speed tests give similar results today, i.e. download speed is around 1.1
  5. ISP is Adelphia (cable) I do have a router (ASANTE FR3004 LC) but I get the same behavior when I bypass the router. However, when I took down the Freedom Firewall the tracert no longer timed out. Next Question: How much would one expect the router to slow down the download? My downloads went up almost 1000 Kbps when the router was bypassed. Normal? Anything I can do about this (besides keeping the router and the wife's laptop and a printer out of the loop)?
  6. Why does Tracert time out on my system? Is there a specific port that I need to "open" on my firewall? Here is the log file: Log created by AutoCheck.bat on Thu 06/30/2005 Pinging testmy.net [67.18.179.85] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 67.18.179.85: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=52 Reply from 67.18.179.85: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=52 Reply from 67.18.179.85: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=52 Reply from 67.18.179.85: bytes=32 time=45ms TTL=52 Ping statistics for 67.18.179.85: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 44ms, Maximum = 46ms, Average = 44ms Ping Complete. 7. Yoy cannot format the C drive if you booted up from the C drive. You need to boot up from another drive, say A and then issue the FORMAT C: command.
  8. Is there any advantage or disadvantage (i.e. performance impact) to tweak my settings to the "plan rates" only? If I have a 4000/384 plan from my provider is there any harm done in using the Cablenut settings for say 6000/768? It doesn't appear to make any difference, so why not? One advantage I see is that in case Adelphia update my segment of their network from 4000 to 6000, I would "be ready" and not having to rely on them actually telling me they have upgraded. Also, what is the best, simplest way to establish the latency?
