  1.

yeah, ok. but what's wrong with getto?

anyhow, kiss. (keep it simple, stupid.)

rtfm or open the box or whatever to find out exactly who built your board.

go to their site, google for it if necessary

there they should offer the latest board drivers, bios updates etc. etc. including your sound driver.

download what you need, install it, and crank up the speakers.

  2. first of all, is the number of users the number of users blankly staring at their screen or the number of users actually sucking data at that time?

it seems to me that it is the number of people trolling the site at any given time, CA3le, can you confirm or deny? because if it is the number of people testing, and really only people with fast connections test, then say an average speed is 2.5Mbps with 200+ people testing that makes 500Mbps... what kind of lashup to the web does this server have, and on another note, isn't the traffic hellaciously expensive?

    addendum:

lost my own thread... if it's people trolling and not actually doing tests, then at 200 users there should be a wild variation of the amount of people actually running a certain test at any given moment, explaining variations in the speed when the servers lash-up to the web tops out.

    meh. 2nd addendum. rtfm.

faq says it's a 100 mbps lashup to the isp's backbone.

basic math tells me if more than 33 people are doing a 3mbps test, things get bottlenecked.

now, this is not a complaint, just stating the facts as they appear to me, and besides, three cheers out to anyone willing to foot the bandwidth bill for this rig, if it is indeed a bottleneck due to too many people testing at any given time, topping the 100 mbit link for hours... ouchies.

  3. i would think that somewhere in all these companies that run AV antispyware and similar regularly updated stuff there is a little comp racking up a list of /subscribers/ and comparing it with the beancounters data on revenue, coming up in the red every single f-ing time. sooner or later, when the company is experiencing financial difficulties and the free advertising of the partially black distribution of their product seems less valuable than the possible influx of funds from all those /subscribers/, this data will be cc'ed to the legal department for liquidation of assets.

look at ms. they make a stink about people actually /selling/ copies of their product and keep up a stiff public opinion campaign against rampant pirating, but in the end, they are happy to have all the kids getting used to all their products. the reason being that once these kids grow up and enter the business world, they will favor what they know (ms) over something cheaper which scares them because it's /different/. (opensource)

and i do try to purchase music/games/warez that i like. but if i download the 23rd cover of a song by some testically constricted baldfaced winkydink of a teeny-group or some such, i will tend to hate it and decide to baleet it and /not/ buy the album despite all the hype. one of the reasons the riaa hates p2p is that the custoer can make up his/her (ooh. PC!) mind about the album /before/ going and spending money on it.

my point is that, uhm, what is my point?

i guess something about not stealing stuff you like, using p2p kind of as a way to get a full working demo then purchasing the product, or some such.

  4. i can get empire earth to run decently on this machine. dell optiplex gx110 for stats, modded with a 250 gig maxtor.

saw some screenshots and hype for empire earth two the other day. after buying a new keyboard because the drool shortet the old one, i wept bitterly about needing a <much> bigger system to run that. sniffles.

[glow=red,2,300]BUT EMPIRE EARTH IS STILL THE BEST RTS OUT THERE!![[/glow]

other games on personal cool list: need for speed, nhl hockey both EA.

duke nukem3d and shadow warrior were my favorite ego shooters, since at least they make me laugh instead of being so dead serious about racking up a bodycount.

  5. heh. good to see there's still intelligent peeps on the web. have you looked into the yahoo mess boards? pun intended. say something, anything, and within 10 posts you have republicans and democrats turning it into lib-bashing or whining about the lost election, respectively. quite sad.

as to mac, it's like with that digicam, webcam combo. they wanted to make em, specially the imac good computers and user friendly at the same time. so there's shortcomings on both ends. :)

  6. well, yo piqued my interest on the subject, so i did a quick google, and it seems that quite a few of the fuji (www.fujifilm.com) have the webcam feature. they also seem like nice digicams. what is probably a big minus is the fact that they are rather pricey.

i stand by my previous verdict. forget about compromises. you never get what you really need. buy decent cam and decent webcam, probably save money in the process, and you can pick both for it's specialized features.

but then, i could be wrong. :)

  7. i've had this symantec corporate thingummy here for some time, but on further reflection it has dawned on me that using non-legal warez might not be the brightest thing to do if you're gonna log on to the mfr. website for weekly updates.

for my own peace of mind i've decided to either go freeware or buy a license. i can get the complete symantec av/spyware/firewall kit with a years of service for 50 bucks at costco, but atm the thought of buying that still makes me cringe.

  8. well, stopping short of actually asking for a discussion of th merits of open source vs. MS or intel vs. AMD i'm going to ask for your views on a topic with not much less potential for controversy.

which free, and i mean /legally/ free AV soft offers the most ban for the, albeit unpaid, buck?

  9. ah, color me stupid. missed the webcam part.

hm. buy decent digicam, then standalone webcam? sounds to me like the combos give too much away on the digicam end, in favor of the webcam option...

and the video function is really nice. on the 512sd card i popped in i can take 48 minutes of 320*240 at good framerate.

moved to cable from puerto rico telephone company dsl. those <language fit for a marine> decided that in the interest of security they would block /all/ ports, oh, they left 80, 23 etc open, nice of em, on their end. seeing as the connection is used as a home office, and the company wants to be able to admin the machine with pcanywhere, this is a /slight/ problem. their comment: well, give us the ip that the admin logs on from and we will set up a tunnel for you. <WTF?> well, got that done once, lasted a week. called adelphia, asked what their policy on port blocking is. they asked me if i was a prtc dsl customer. aha. nuff said. well, the connection costs 55.95 US, the company reimburses up to 50 for broadband, so it's 6 bucks net. sweet. and the ip is supposed to be dynamic, but i haven't seen it change in 2 months now... best thing was the digging up to the house, laying cable install etc came to 75 bucks. good deal.

Greets out to all the troops fighting for democracy! also to those currently engaged in the cleanup in SE asia.

  12. i think the thing 'bout linux not losing capacity on drives like windoze is a myth, but i'll e-mail the mythbusters about it, see what jamie can come up with. the 'loss' in capacity is due to a mentality that exists in all trades: how deep, how hard and how fast can we screw the customer. they advertise with one gig = 1000mb, some even put up little disclaimers about this, then the OS has to be a bit more accurate calculating capacity, so the 1024 megs per gig rule is applied, thereby causing 'loss' of capacity.

  13. actually silence is an issue, since the hdd led on the case couldn't care less if there's activity on the new controller, and as far as i could tell it doesnt have leads for it, although i could do the unthinkable and actually take a look at the .doc's to check. in any case, the drive is too damnably quiet to monitor it's activity aurally.
