  1. ok one question...should my MTU be 1500 or 1494 (1494 is what i figured it out that it should be by using a linksys knowledgebase article...basically i pinged google with some settings and they said to keep readjusting until i got a fragmented packet...anyway i ended up with 1494). so which should i do in that screenshot you gave me? the router is set to 1494 currently.
  2. ok...i'll do that right now and post afterwards, thx
  3. I posted in this thread about some problems I had with optonline being only 19%: https://testmy.net/forum/t-6920'>https://testmy.net/forum/t-6920 I was at 19%...I changed my MTU to 1494 on my router (followed the instructions in a linksys knowledgebase article about how to determine the optimal MTU), downloaded DRTCP, and changed the MTU on my computer as well. After doing that, I am now at 26.5% of optonline's average. :::.. I am using Windows XP Professional. 2. I am using optimum online and the advertised speed for download is "up to 10,000 kbps" and I could not find an advertised upload speed. 3. I have never used any kind of tweak program. But here are the results from the broadband reports thing: http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:d9f45e?service=cable&speed=9999&os=winXP&via=normal 4. I did power cycle it. 9. I run ad-aware and microsoft's regularly. 10. Not using Zonealarm. 11. I'm using Windows Firewall...I do have a McAfee thing installed, but not the firewall...just for virus protection. 12. Scanned for viruses, don't have any. 13. Have all of the latest windows updates. 14. I ran CCleaner. 15. I looked at VanBuren's cablenut thing, but didn't know what to do, and was scared to change anything or do anything withour knowing what I'm doing. Just a quick recap of my setup: I have a split-level house, downstairs is the cable modem (motorola surfboard) and a linksys wireless router right next to it. Upstairs are two desktop computers, both with usb wireless network adapters. Both are running Windows XP Professional. I had 5.8 ghz phones, but they're all unplugged. I do have two old 900 mhz phones, and could install them...but really, I only need my one corded phone setup for now. So...what else can I do to improve the speed? I don't know anything about RWIN and haven't changed any settings. Seems like I need to know the advertised speed to calculate the correct RWIN? I spoke to optonline over the livechat and they said 10,000 kbps as the advertised download speed? Is that even possible? thanks very much
  4. yeah...well all the phones are unplugged now. i found out using linksys's knowledgebase that my MTU should be 1494. i haven't changed anything in my registry, but i did download DRTCP and i'm going to change that. so after doing that, if i still have problems, i'll post in the make it faster forum...thanks very much
  5. umm...why was this moved to optimum online? this applies to making a connection faster, it has nothing specifically to do with optimum online as netmasta showed. i just put optimum online as the topic in case someone had similar problems, but now i see it's a general networking issue. i bet a lot of people don't know this about 5.8 ghz phones and MTU...
  6. thanks i think i know what a BIG problem is: http://www.tomsnetworking.com/FAQ-37-Performance-16.php#481 most 5.8 ghz phones ALSO transmit on 2.4 ghz, so they use both...the only safe ones are TRUE 5.8 ghz phones (tom says uniden) OR 900 mhz phones.... i bet that is causing a lot of the problem!
  7. one other thing...is it possible that my wireless network adapters will figure out the right MTU and set it correctly in the computer? or is this a software thing i must do myself? because the only thing i changed was on the router itself.
  8. Thank you VERY much, netmasta that is exactly what i was looking for.
  9. Someone sent me a PM telling me I'm rude...I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just frustrated that hours of Linksys tech support from an Indian call center haven't helped at all. I already know the basics of networking...this isn't a basic question that any computer literate person could guess at. So if someone is aware of the pros/cons of lowering MTU, please let me know or direct me to where I can find out. That's all...I'm not looking to get into a pissing match, and honestly I don't think I was rude, but for anyone who was offended, I'm sorry.
  10. Then why would I only be running at 20%? It can't just be the plan, and I don't download enough to be capped by far. Look....I just want to speed up my connection...if this isn't the forum for that, can someone please kindly tell me where I should go to figure it out? I kinda already know what's been said so far intuitively....specifically, I need to know about MTU's. thanks
  11. so does anyone here know ANYTHING about MTU's?
  12. So...does anyone know how I can increase this, and what are the pros/cons of lowering MTU further?
  13. humorman.....i'm not goign anywhere near 11 mbps... even if my wireless network was capable of 54...i'm still not even pulling 2 mbps. i'm not using my wireless network to its full capacity, so why would it matter if i increased it?
  14. hmmm that optonline speedcheck site says i'm doing 2089 kbps??
  15. but are you on wireless jimmy? what do you think ic an do to fix it? i was very surprised i was only at 20% of optonline
  16. no i don't think so.... 11 mbps is still faster than the speed of my cable modem, and i have a good signal. why would it make a difference?
  17. Please see http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-6967 for more information. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 1261 Kbps about 1.3 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 154 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1) Test Time:: Mon Aug 1 17:18:23 EDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 23X faster than 56K 1MB download in 6.65 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 19.54 % of your hosts average (optonline.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-YNRDS12TE Those are my stats...this is my setup: Split-level house, downstairs is the cable modem and right by it is a linksys 802.11b wireless router with a linksys high gain antenna I added.. Upstars are two desktop computers- one has a Linksys Wireless-B USB network adapter, the other has a Belkin 802.11b wireless usb adapter. Why is it only at 19.54%? Is that because of how many people are using it with a wired connection? There are no 2.4 GHz phones in the phone, they're all 5.8 GHz. I spoke to Linksys about this, and the guy had me lower my MTU to 1492 and that improved it by maybe 10 Kbps, and that test I just did is with the lowered MTU. What can I do to improve this? Should cable be like twice the speed? I very much doubt I download enough to be capped. thanks Why is it only 19.54%? There are Excellen
