  1. Aww, it didn't work. For some reason I really thought it would. I'm pretty sure I did everything right, but something is still wrong. It no longer says limited or no connection! It says it's connected now, but it's just still 0 packets sent and 0 packets recieved. I guess I'll have to go buy that network card. They are cheap...right? About $20?
  2. Ohhh. That was confusing. Ok so... there should be a file called nettcpip in my Windows folder. Well there isn't, haha. Edit: Wait there's supposed to be a folder called inf? Ugh... Also, how do I unhide the inf folder because it appears to be hidden.
  3. Yeah it's not there. There is no root folder for me after going to the WINDOWS folder.
  4. Umm, I don't even think I have %winroot% lol. I looked around my Windows folder for it and ran a hard drive search for it, but it can't find it.
  5. Umm I'm on a router, but it doesn't work when directly connected to my cable modem either. Yes, I did try powercycling. Ok, I'll try the winsock thing I guess. Edit: Hey Fallow on this step: 9. Locate the Nettcpip.inf file in %winroot%inf, and then open the file in Notepad. Where do I find that? Is that a folder somewhere, or do I find it on the registry editor?
  6. Yeah automatically detect settings is disabled. Also, is the winsock thing really necessary? I don't get the socket error thing, and I don't like screwing with the registry. I usually end up messing up my computer. I think the NIC thing was the problem, but when I go to device manager, it says this device is working properly. My router is a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router, Model No. WRT54G.
  7. They both didn't work, aww. When I typed in /ipconfig then ipconfig /renew or whatever, it says, "An error occured while renewing interface Cox Cable : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."
  8. I kind of forgot the default IP to see my router config, so can you please post it? Also Fallows, I tried your guide. It didn't work. My network card probably is "dead." But I think that it's integrated, since it's not in the PCI Bus. When I tried doing run>cmd>ipconfig, I just got all 0s...
  9. No I don't think I can. Actually, the only way I know of on how to access the config page is entering the IP adress in the adress bar of IE, which I don't think is possible. Edit: If nothing will work I guess I can take my network card from my other computer, and try to put it in lol. But I do very stupid things when it comes to this stuff. I took a RAM stick out, and now I can't stick it back in. I tried putting my graphics card into my new computer, but after minutes of shoving it in there I realized the black slot wasn't an AGP slot.
  10. Yesterday, I had all of a sudden lost my Internet connection while browsing the web. I just thought, no big deal. It'll work later. Then today I come home from school, and check if my Internet is working yet. It turns out it's not. I realized my laptop can get a connection to my wireless router, so I'm thinking its my desktop that has some problem, not my connection itself. I also tried connecting my modem to my computer directly, and that didn't work. I also tried doing the same thing with my laptop, and it works fine. Does anybody know what's going on? I haven't made any changes or anything to my PC.
  11. Yeah I'm on a Linksys WIreless-G Broadband Router thing. I tried all the profiles but none seem to work! Maybe I should get a different anti-virus.
  12. Halt is off, and I put a check mark next to every single thing. Even when the firewall is disabled I can't connect. Could the anti-virus be the problem?
  13. I recently just got Pc-Cillin because I heard it's pretty good. My problem is that every time I open it, my Internet connection gets blocked. Even if I disable Pc-Cillin firewall, I still can't see any sites. I need to close it with the tray icon. Does anyone know what I can do, so that I can keep Pc-Cillin on while having an Internet connection?

  15. Because my product key was invalid. Being that I had a pirated version of XP.
  16. Yeah I think it was. You know that number when you click Properties at My Computer? It says Registered To: and then a number? I remember google searching, "How To Tell if You're Running On A Pirated Windows XP" and it said something about certain numbers and my product key or whatever it was matched those numbers! Also I was unable to download SP2.
  17. Yeah I know what it looks like. It's clearly not there. I even checked inside the computer, lol. I told my dad what wingzero said about calling, and he asked if we had to pay for it. I just told him no (I don't think I lied,) so he'll call tomorrow morning and stuff. Hopefully I can get that product key without any problems. My dad told me there was no product key with our Windows XP, but his friend installed it for us so he can't really help me out. It'a custom made though. It should still have a product key shouldn't it? Maybe they cheated!
  18. Wouldn't they ask me why the original product key didn't work? What would I say? Also I'm a little scared to call since I'm onyl 13, and if they ask me a question about my XP being "illegal" or whatever I wouldn't know how to answer. I'll just wait until my dad gets home. I also stutter when I talk to strangers sometimes.
  19. Aight Pete I PMed you. I hope you don't send me a virus over e-mail!
  20. Re-format finished is the good news. Also, the Cox Cable now works! The thing is...I don't have Windows Product Key. I can't seem to find it anywhere on my comp and I don't have the manual. Last time before the re-format I was running a pirated Windows XP lol. Can anybody help me out? I tried entering the product key to my sister's Dell, but that didn't work.
  21. Hmm nevermind, I found a Windows XP Pro CD in the bag with all the CDs that came with my sister's computer. The thing is that that CD is meant for a Dell so I wonder if it'll work. If it does work do I enter the produc key to my sister's comp or something? Well whatever. Formatting the partition, currently at 23%. What's the difference between Format NTFS (Quick) and Format NTFS except the quick one is "quicker"? Is that actually better? Oh well I'm going for the slow one. This better work. It really should!
  22. Damn. The Cox Cable guy unplugged my computer, and tried it with my sister's computer which was newer, then the Cox Cable worked. After that I unplugged my sister's computer, and put my computer back at the right spot. It didn't work with the Cox. But here's the problem. My uncle had taken my monitor, and today he just gave it back. Now I want to try again with the Cox, but I try to start up my computer and...it doesn't work! It takes me to that screen with: Safe Mode Safe Mode Networking Safe Mode with Command Last Known Configuration and all that other stuff. Safe mode doesn't even work though. When I tried it only a few days ago with my Cox, maybe like 3 days ago, it started up just fine. Now I try again and this happens. It says something about it might be because of a hardware change or something, but I didn't change any hardware at all. The only difference from this time and the last time it worked is the keyboard and mouse. I doubt that really matters. Can anyone help me out? After this works I can make a new topic and you guys can help me get my Cox working on my other computer if I can't. I feel so bad because all of my topics are all requesting for help. Oh well.
  23. I tried changing my NIC. First I tried 100 Mbps full duplex and I didn't see very much of an improvement. I think Auto Detect seems the best for me. After I tried 100 Mbps full duplex though I tried the rest! :::..
