  1. About 5 minutes ago, after a downloaded a meg file VERY quickly (for my system), I went and checked the speed at testmy. Here's what I got: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2266 Kbps about 2.3 Mbps (tested with 579 KB) Download Speed is:: 277 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 40 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 3.7 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=D265BM7XT Wow. If only it was this fast all the time.... Does anyone consistently get speeds like the above, and if so, HOW?
  2. Hi Microwave, Yeah, I did setup IE the same way, but didn't give it too much thought, as I never use it and just wanted to see how it compares to FF. With FF, using the proxy does seem to speed up sites that you've already been to slightly. It's not a gigantic difference, but probably worth doing anyways. (Every little bit helps with these friggin satellites, right? ) Btw, the only difference in speed between IE and FF is when it comes to downloading, IE is significantly faster. However, I think Firefox renders html faster so it comes out like IE loads images faster, and FF loads the text faster. That seems to be my experience anyways. I know the Rev would love to argue with me, lol.
  3. Interesting. I thought you would have to set it up for both browsers. But what my question REALLY is: If you look at the bottom of this page, where it has the Mozilla user instructions, http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/8522 ...you will see it says "Type in about:config as the URL in your browser's address window. Scroll down to network.proxy.http. Enter the LAN IP of your DW6000. " Is the LAN IP just 192.168.0.1 by default for all Dway users, or do I have a unique one for MY dw6000??? (Sorry I'm so clueless, lol...)
  4. Rev- I don't know if you're still looking back in here, but THANKS!!!!!! Just what I was looking for.
  5. I want to make sure I'm setting this up right for Firefox too.... How do I know what the "the LAN IP of your DW6000" is for mine? Thanks!!!!
  6. Hiya all, Well, I just found this awesome forum about two days ago, and already the Rev has helped me immensely,,, Apparently he won't be here anymore, and why is not the matter of this thread. I haven't been here long enough to have my emotions vested in the matter. All I know for sure is, he seemed to be a superhelpful, superknowledgeable guy, and I was wondering if anyone knows how I can go about getting his email or some other contact info. Thanks! P.S. - Read the title of this thread again and DONT make it into politics.
  7. Thanks Rev, I will look for that page.
  8. I have the newest version of Zone Alarm on my pc. When i do the Shields Up test through my dialup connection, I get a "Passed" Total Stealth rating. When I test "All Service Ports" through my dw6000, practically every friggin port is open!!! What the hell? And that is through both IE and Firefox... What am I missing? Thanks!
  9. As a total newb to this forum, I have no idea what the hell you guys are talking about...however, it looks like Rev is kickin a**, and that's fine by me. Also, those battle-smilies are hilarious!
  10. I've read where people have adjusted their dishes and improved their speed by doing so. How would I go about doing this? SHould I use the sig strength to measure the best position or should I do a download test at testmy.net after every adjustment and see what yields the fastest downloads? Thanks!!!
  11. I think you're totally wrong there Rev... In a year, FF is gonna whip IE's butt in every possible way. It already does unless you use Dway. And in fact, I've been trying to test browsing speeds with both, and IE seems only SLIGHTLY faster, very slight actually. Anyhow, one of us will be wrong in a year...on the anniversary of this post, the loser will buy me (oops, I mean the winner) a drink. Take care!
  12. Yes, just downloaded it yesterday and configured it as described by the illustrious Reverend in this thread: https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=1703.0 I am also running Zone Alarm although it seems to not affect anything whether on or off...
  13. I'm not exactly sure I know what you mean by that, however, if you want to see how my LAN settings are configured, just look at the screenshots is this thread: https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=1708.0 ...and substitue the number 87 for 83, lol.
  14. Ok, I have been testing going back and forth between FF and IE using testmy.net and here are the results: Mean Averages: FF: 560.3 Kbps IE: 895.3 Kbps Both browsers have the exact same tweaks. Not sure why the first test was so opposite the rest, I suppose it threw off the averages as well. Also noteworthy: Although I used the "Medium" file for most tests, you'll notice in Test 8 and 9, I used the "Largest" file setting. This yielded some of the best times for IE and some of the worst for FF. I then returned to Medium for Test 10 and the FF time DID go up, which seems to confirm that the larger the file is, the worse FF does. After getting hooked on FF while on dialup, it looks like it might be back to IE for me. Although, I don't seem to notice a drastic difference in browsing speed using both of them to visit the same sites. They both seem to load different sites faster. Can anyone confirm that IE actually SURFS faster for them? BTW, I am using XP WITHOUT SP2, but IE has all the other updates installed. Please post your thoughts. (Anyone ever tried any of those tabbed browsing add-ons for IE???) RESULTS: FF: :::.. 15. You guys rock! That's wierd, I must have read that 83 somewhere else and didnt realize it was for the 4000's.. DOH! Thanks again, going to be doing some extensive testing now that I've tweaked IE and FF, and I'll post the results later.
  16. Nope, still not working. When I try to make the changes and then browse to a site, IE tells me on the bottom left corner, "Connecting to site 192.168.0.1." and then I just get the page cant be displayed error. Here are some screenshots of how I configured the proxy:
  17. http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/8522 Just tried to implement this IE tweak and so far all I can get is "Cannot find server" messages from IE Does this work for anyone else?
  18. Yes, I understood that about the TCP Optimizer, I was just saying "We'll see' in a roundabout way... Hey can someone tell me, or direct me to the link that explains how to setup your LAN in IE and use the Dway cache (or something like that...)? I was reading about it earlier today, but can't find the site now...
  19. Hmmm...well, I just downloaded the TCP Optimizer that you mentioned in the other thread, so we'll see how that goes. Does Zone Alarm effect Dway at all? I have had ZA running on my PC for a while now... Also, are you saying that https sites will load faster with IE?
  20. Arg, I wasn't hoping you wouldn't come back and say something like that, lol. I became a firefox junkie whilst on dialup... How can you say it's actually LESS secure? Btw, thanks for the quick reply and my SS is 75 which seems not bad compared to what I've read in the dslreport forums...
  21. I have a dw6000. Here is what it gave me: running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 1.35Mb/s running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 992.96kb/s The slowest link in the end-to-end path is a 100 Mbps Full duplex Fast Ethernet subnet BTW, I'm brand new and looking foward to learning all I can here. Reverend, you seem like a real cool guy so far... I have had my dw6000 setup for a couple months with fairly good results. I was just reading about how apparently IE is significantly faster on Dway then Firefox, which kind of bummed me out...there's no going back to IE for me, lol. Anyways, can someone tell me how to check my signal strength though firefox? Thanks!
